Company’s experts share insights into the value of chromium and its innovation in poultry

After a three-year hiatus, ESPN returns for its 23^rd edition, organized by the Italian branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association and held at the Palacongressi di Rimini in Rimini, Italy.

DLG opens North American representative office with appointment of sales representative

As part of its internationalis
ation strategy, the DLG (German Agricultural Society) has established its first DLG representative office in North America. Located in Saskatoon, Canada, the office will be managed by Brad Michnik who has been appointed Sales Representative, effective immediately, for DLG’s North American operations, including the United States. Michnik brings more than 30 years of agricultural experience including farm equipment expertise to his role.

“We are pleased that Brad Michnik will manage DLG’s new representative office in Canada and be responsible for strengthening relationships with North American manufacturers, distributors, farmers and agricultural organisations, all important participants at DLG’s international events such as Agritechnica and EuroTier/Energy Decentral,” said Ulrike Schmidt-Machinek, Head of International Sales, DLG.

Michnik joins the DLG from Saskatchewan Trade & Export Partnership (STEP) where he held various management positions, most recently serving as senior vice-president, responsible for trade development. His responsibilities included supporting North American companies on their export of farm equipment and agricultural products and services through practical export training, market research, and numerous trade missions to strategic world markets.

Prior to joining STEP, he served as Sales Manager for an internationally renowned, Canada-based manufacturer of agricultural and construction equipment. Brad has been active on various boards and committees concerning domestic and international economic and export development initiatives, a number of which were with leading international trade shows.

A native of Canada’s Saskatchewan province, Michnik earned a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.) degree from the University of Saskatchewan. His Certified International Trade Professional (C.I.T.P) designation remains active.

The representative office in Saskatchewan is DLG’s first office in North America.

Drawing on a network of experts with international expertise, DLG has subsidiary companies in nine countries.

A New Endeavor: Aboitiz affiliated Gold Coin (China) Joining Force with Bühler to Build a New Feed Mill in China

On June 13, 2023, the signing ceremony of the “500 thousand MT Annual Capacity Modern Feed mill Strategic Collaboration” between Bühler and Gold Coin (China), a subsidiary of Aboitiz Food Group, was grandly held in Dongguan, China.

Tristan Aboitiz, President and CEO of Aboitiz Food Group, Eric Nojac, Business CEO of Aboitiz Food Group, Ong Kar Ching, First Vice President of Gold Coin Group & China Regional Director, Tao Ye, President of Yunnan Feed Industry Association, Du Jinliang, CEO of Kunming Jinhangchen Bio-tech Co., Ltd., Wang Weibo, President of Bühler Greater China, and Philipp Hug, Managing Director of Bühler's Animal Nutrition Division, delivered speeches at the event respectively.

Shao Liping, General Manager of Bühler (Changzhou) Machinery Co., Ltd., Qin Xiaodong, Marketing Director of Bühler's Animal Feed and Premix Division, representatives from both parties and guests from all social circles attended the signing ceremony.

According to the agreement, the two parties will work together to build a new feed mill for Gold Coin (Yunnan) Co., Ltd., which will be a professional and comprehensive feed mill integrating independent pig feed line, poultry feed line, aquatic feed line, premixed feed line, and ruminant feed line, with a total annual production capacity of 500,000 tons.

This mill will be equipped with Bühler's cutting-edge hardware system and electrical automation system to ensure the success of the project in all aspects. It is committed to implementing a multi-species strategy to meet the needs of China's localized animal husbandry. The independent and professional production lines are designed to avoid cross-contamination and ensure biosecurity. The mill will form strategic regional advantages in raw material procurement, and will have fully automated feed production process to ensure feed quality and safety. Through the advantages of centralized procurement, collaborative procurement, the cost structure of raw materials will be optimized. After completion, the mill will supply safe and assured feed products flexibly and further enrich and meet the actual demands of the market in Yunnan and surrounding areas, and drive the development of the industry.

Background of the project:

The Gold Coin Group started feed research and production in 1953. It is one of the earliest and most successful large-scale feed manufacturers in Asia, and has been engaged in long-term close cooperation with Bühler.

Gold Coin entered China’s feed processing industry in 1982, and was the third foreign-funded enterprise landed in China since China's reform and opening-up. Their first company in Shekou, Shenzhen had a 25-ton livestock and poultry feed line which adopted Bühler’s equipment.  For decades, the operation of this mill has been in good condition. In the 1990s, Gold Coin’s feed mill in Zhanjiang and Zhangzhou continued to choose Bühler as their partners. In 2009, Gold Coin’s mill in Dongguan became the industry benchmark... As of today, during the establishment of several model projects, the two parties have always respected each other and collaborated with each other despite of the economic ups and downs, always helping each other to grow in China.

AAFCO Supports the Innovative FEED Act

Statement from AAFCO Executive Director Austin Therrell

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., June 20, 2023 – On June 8, 2023, the Innovative Feed Enhancement and Economic Development (FEED) Act of 2023 was introduced in the U.S. Senate. The bill, S. 1842, would amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and establish a regulatory pathway for a new category of novel feed additives, called Zootechnical Animal Food Substances (ZAFS), that work within the animal’s gut microbiome to increase production, food safety, and environmental benefits.

The new regulatory category established by the Innovative FEED Act will allow ingredients that have non-nutritive benefits to be regulated as food additives instead of new animal drugs, as was previously required under the Food and Drug Administration’s 1998 Policy and Procedures Manual Guide 1240.3605. This approach will allow feed manufacturers to more clearly identify how their products may benefit consumers and will ultimately promote innovation and allow U.S. agriculture to remain competitive on the international stage.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is an independent organisation that provides ingredient definitions, label standards and laboratory standards for state and federal feed programs. AAFCO members are also responsible for the inspection and regulation of feed ingredients, which would include ZAFS under the Innovative FEED Act.

“AAFCO is very supportive of the Innovative FEED Act and the modernisation it will bring to the regulatory approval process. This proposal provides a pathway for products that have the opportunity to greatly impact the feed industry, and still provides the appropriate level of oversight to ensure safety and consumer confidence,” said Austin Therrell, AAFCO’s executive director. 

AAFCO collaborates closely with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), on a wide range of issues related to animal feed and food safety. AFIA has endorsed the Innovative FEED Act for the positive impact it would have on animal health, human food safety and the environment.

AFIA Names Megan Fulmer Member of the Year

ARLINGTON, Va. – June 14, 2023 – The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) named Megan Fulmer, director of import and export programs for Darling Ingredients Inc., as one of AFIA's 2023 Member of the Year award recipients during the AFIA International Trade Committee dinner Tuesday night.

“Megan is the type of member that the AFIA staff rely on for active engagement in a wide variety of topics and is willing to help coordinate across all AFIA objectives, providing insightful feedback to new policy proposals or challenges facing the industry,” said Mallory Gaines, AFIA’s director of market access and multilateral affairs. “She not only speaks on behalf of her company, but also does so with a view of benefitting the entire animal food industry to better navigate the waters in the ever-changing sea of import and export policy.”

The Member of the Year award is presented to an AFIA member who exhibits outstanding support in achieving the organisation’s goals and objectives throughout the year. With the exception of the 83 members of the Food Safety Modernisation Act working group who received the award in 2014 and the entire AFIA membership following the COVID-19 outbreak in 2021, only 41 individuals have been honored prior to this year.

Fulmer has been an active member of the AFIA’s international trade and pet food committees, serving as committee chair for both. During her time on the international trade committee, Fulmer has advocated for the association to lead the animal food industry’s engagement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to address many outstanding export issues impacting the industry. She personally spearheaded several discussions where industry input, examples and support were needed to initiate change. Recently, she also engaged on the planning committee for the APHIS facility export training held at the International Production & Processing Expo in January 2023. The training was so successful that both APHIS and the industry desire to host additional opportunities to maintain open communication. 

Fulmer received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire specializing in Animal and Equine Sciences.

A second 2023 AFIA Member of the Year recipient will be announced in September.

dsm-firmenich initiates patent infringement action against Haineng for 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 feed application

dsm-firmenich, the leading innovator in health, nutrition, and beauty, has initiated legal action in China for patent infringement against Shandong Haineng Bioengineering Co. Ltd., asserting that certain Haineng swine compound premix containing 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 constitutes unlawful use of dsm-firmenich patented technology.

The petition filed with the court asks it to order that Haineng cease using dsm-firmenich patented technology and pay compensation for the infringement.
