Flint Hills Resources launches Maximised Stillage Co-Products operation in Shell Rock, Iowa

Today Flint Hills Resources announced it has begun deliveries of its NexPro® protein ingredient from its Shell Rock, Iowa, ethanol plant.

The company installed Maximised Stillage Co-Products (MSC) technology at the plant earlier this year. This is the second Flint Hills Resources ethanol plant to receive an MSC addition.

'This is an important milestone for our company,' said Garland Krabbenhoft, plant manager at the Flint Hills Resources Shell Rock ethanol plant. 'The NexPro protein ingredient we create here from Iowa farmers' corn will be used in animal food production around the world.'

NexPro protein ingredient is used in a variety of animal feed rations. The product is made by extracting protein from the whole stillage that remains after ethanol is made.

At most ethanol plants, whole stillage is processed into distillers corn oil and distillers grains for animal feed. The MSC technology, licensed to the company by Fluid Quip Technologies, allows the Shell Rock plant to extract and refine this protein.

'Global protein demand continues to grow and so does the need for new feed ingredients,' said Mark Murphy, general manager of global protein marketing and trading for Flint Hills Resources. 'NexPro, a 50 percent protein ingredient, provides poultry, aquaculture, pet food, dairy and swine customers a higher-value alternative to their existing feed ingredient options.'

According to the United Nations, between 2010 and 2050, global demand for food is growing by 60 percent, with meat production growing by 70 percent.

NexPro will be sold locally, nationally, and internationally, competing against corn gluten meal, soy and corn protein concentrates, and fishmeal.

'The addition of MSC at Shell Rock is a testament to our employees, and to our customers whose corn we're now able to transform to create even more value,' said Nathan Underwood, commercial manager at Flint Hills' Shell Rock ethanol plant.

Hamlet Protein adapting customer interactions during COVID-19 pandemic

Hamlet Protein, a global leader in soy protein specialties for young animal nutrition, is finding new ways to share knowledge and insights with their customers and business partners.

As travel restrictions continue to limit the opportunity for face-to-face meetings, Hamlet Protein has found other ways to engage with its stakeholders. In October that resulted in various webinars and special edition of Feed Your Brain.

Hamlet Protein hosted a webinar on the market dynamics of the global pork industry.

Hamlet Protein CEO Erik Visser received Justin Sherrard, Global Strategist Animal Protein at Rabobank, to discuss the current situation in the swine market and 2021 outlook.

The webinar was held in two sessions, to allow a global audience to attend. It focused on the impact of African Swine Flu (ASF), COVID-19, trade disputes and sustainability on animal protein markets around the world.

After a lively discussion with the participants, a 2021 outlook was shared, expecting an initial recovery of swine markets next year, with Chinese local production and import volumes continuing to drive global market dynamics.

Hamlet Protein has a strong presence in the US, where it operates a state of the art production facility in Findlay, Ohio.

The North American swine market has come under pressure in recent months. Hamlet Protein invited Joe Kerns to speak on current and expected market developments.

Mr Kerns highlighted that US pig numbers are decreasing with on-going sow liquidation, however, domestic demand for pork continues to be strong just like export volumes. That leads to cautious optimism on market hog prices and a return to profit for pork producers in 2021.

Jim Wiesemeyer shared insights on the agenda of the candidates for US presidency and more specifically on their policies for the agriculture industry.

In Germany Hamlet Protein organized a small-scale Feed Your Brain seminar. The number of attendants was restricted, following strict Covid-19 guidelines.

The seminar focused on young animal nutrition in both swine and poultry. The attendees discussed the impact of the recent ASF cases in wild boars, ban on exports for German pork to China and COVID-19 on the Germany swine industry.

In a discussion on sustainability, Dr Kampf from DLG highlighted the continuous dependence on soy imports for animal feed production in Germany.

Silos Cordoba supply steel structures for a feed mill in Venezuela

The harmony between structural, conveying and grain storage systems is key for the proper functioning of one of the largest plants in Venezuela.

The Agroebenezer Feed Plant, C.A. required silos, handling equipment and a series of structures. All those elements had to be designed to fit perfectly. The plant has a capacity of 50 tonnes per hour and includes a storage area for grains and flours and a processing area where the feed is produced.

The corn storage area consists of six Silos model 20.63/16 each, with a storage capacity of 6,779.50m3, which results in 5,084.63 metric tons of corn, so that the feed plant has a total storage capacity of 30,507.78 metric tons of corn.

The flour storage area consists of two grain warehouses, the first one for the storage of sub-products, whose dimensions are 30 by 42 metres with a storage capacity of 4,100 metric tons of flours, such as meat flour, viscera meal, feathers flour, wheat bran, rice flour, corn cake, sugarcane bagasse and stuffed grass.

The second grain warehouse is used for the storage of soybean, with dimensions 40 by 72 metres and a capacity of 13,500 metric tonnes.

The process area consists of a warehouse of dimensions 40 by 102 metres with a building for pelletizing equipment that houses all the structures that serve as support for machinery, whose dimensions are 24 metres long and 34.5 metres high.

The warehouse for pelletizing equipment houses a support structure of 16 cells for dosing and weighing, each cell having a capacity of 43m3 for a total of 515 metric tons, and a support structure for four silos used for the storage of minerals such as phosphate, calcium carbonate, biofos, among others. The silos have a unitary capacity to store 110 metric tons of minerals.

There is a grinding-mixing structure for the addition of flours and micros made by circular Silos and augers for a precise dosage.

The process continues with two fully equipped pellet towers. The towers are constituted by a series of slabs that support the equipment, with a height of 13.95 metres including compensation cells for the main equipment (pelletizer).

Finally, the feed mill also has a bagging and finished product area that consists of eight high hopper silos, model 3.05/7 with a 60° cone and a capacity of 65m3 each.

The plant also has two hoppers entrances, one for flour reception and the other for grains reception.

Finally, the plant has a complete conveying system consisting of belt conveyors, chain conveyors, belt conveyors with tripper, screw conveyors and bucket elevators.

The feed mill is located in the Industrial Area of Chivacoa, Avenida Sorte, Bruzual municipality, Yaracuy, with a land area of 78,311 m2.

Alltech launches global survey on gender equality within the food and agriculture industry

Alltech believes that inclusion cultivates creativity and drives innovation. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but it is also essential to advancing society and the global agri-food industry.

To gather real-world insights into the professional landscape for women in agriculture, Alltech has announced their support of the second annual Women in Food & Ag survey.

Launching on 27 October, the survey aims to collect feedback that empowers the agri-food industry to create a more equitable environment.

The 2019 Women in Food & Ag survey results revealed specific barriers for women in agriculture and a gap between female and male perceptions but reflected an optimistic outlook overall.

As 2020 ushered in unprecedented challenges for agriculture, new questions have been added to the survey to gauge potential inequalities exacerbated by COVID-19. To further globalise this effort and increase accessibility, the survey is available in six languages.

This initiative reflects Alltech's commitment to the U.N. Global Compact and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) related to gender equality. The SDG recognises gender equality as a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

'In order to achieve a Planet of PlentyTM, it is more important than ever for the agri-food industry to perform at its full potential,' said Dr Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech. 'Human ingenuity is our Earth's most valuable resource, and a diverse workforce is essential to building a more sustainable future.'

Women and men in all sectors of the food supply chain are encouraged to contribute to this important global conversation about gender equality in agriculture by taking the survey here.

The survey results will be published on 26 January 2021 on the Alltech ONE Virtual Experience website.

Myande has a highly effective worldwide sales and service network with branches and agents in many countries. Delivery time and delivery quality have been recognised and praised within the industries we serve.

We understand that Chinese companies operate differently from those in other countries. What management philosophy creates the spirit and provides the impetus for an enterprise such as yours?
Passion, precision and honesty is not only expressed in the origin of the name of Myande, but these also the core value of the company and the code of conduct for all employees. We also have clearly defined values that each of these three words include. Turkey changes its customs duty rate for wheat, barley and corn

The Turkish President has decreed that the customs duty applied on the imports of durum wheat, common wheat, red wheat, maize, white barley, malt barley and corn in Turkey has been removed until 1 January, 2021.

Image credit: Kamil PorembiÅ„ski on Flickr
(CC BY-SA 2.0)
With the supplementary decision to the import regime decision, the customs duty on wheat, barley and corn up to 45 percent according to country groups was removed. Previously the customs duty was 45 percent on wheat, 35 percent on barley and 25 percent on corn.

The decision to change the customs duty rate was made due to the increase in global grain prices from major grain exporting countries such as Russia and Ukraine to restrict exports due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and China and similar importing countries to increase wheat imports. Turkey's target is to avoid local price increases.

The decision was published in the official Turkish newspaper on 21 October, 2020.

Dr Braman accepted the AFIA's 2020 Distinguished Service Award at the AFIA Board of Directors meeting this week.

The Distinguished Service Award is AFIA's highest honour and is typically given to the elite members of the U.S. animal food industry who have provided outstanding support to the AFIA and the entire animal food industry throughout their careers.

'Anyone who has worked with Bill knows how much the animal feed industry means to him – he truly put his heart and soul into everything he did to support the industry,' said Ms Novak. 'Bill's many contributions to the feed industry, the AFIA and IFEEDER make him an exceptional choice for this honour.'

Dr Braman has been very involved in the AFIA and the Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER), the latter of which he served as a pioneer trustee and remained on the Board until 2015.

During Dr Braman's tenure with IFEEDER, he also served on the budget task force and research committee and played an active role for several years in the silent auction held at the AFIA's Purchasing and Ingredient Suppliers Conferences.

Dr Braman served on the AFIA Board of Directors from 2011-14, AFIA's Nutrition Committee for more than a decade, including serving in the officer rotation, and AFIA's Liquid Feed Committee for five years. He has embraced every project with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.

Dr Braman has also been very active in several industry groups, including holding memberships in the American Dairy Science Association, American Society of Animal Science, Poultry Science Association and American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS).

From 2009-11, Dr Braman served as the president-elect and president at ARPAS and from 2006-09, he served as the director for the Midwest ARPAS.

Raised on a dairy and crop farm in Indiana, Dr Braman graduated with honours from Purdue University in 1969 with a bachelor's in agricultural education and then received his master's and Ph.D. in animal nutrition from the University of Illinois. While at Purdue, he joined the FarmHouse fraternity and became a member of Alpha Zeta, Block and Bridle and the Purdue choir.
