Fatty acids in feed influence calf performance

Recent research conducted on calf performance by the Nurture Research Center have found that altering the fatty acid profile of calf starters and growers altered the calf body weight gain from birth to at least 4 months of age.

Soy oil which is high in linolenic acid and medium chain fatty acid and butyric acid actually increased the body weight gain and frame growth. Research with soy oil has been rare but the recent results have all been consistent with earlier research in calves fed milk replacer with and without added soy oil. Read more ...

Australian scientists work to produce omega-3 from canola

Three Australian organisations have joined together to produce specialty omega-3 oils from canola varieties, breaking the world’s reliance on fish stocks. Oilseed company Nuseed, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation have joined together in an AUS$50 million (UK£32.866 million) research collaboration which will use leading edge gene technology to develop and commercialise vegetable oil which will contain the same high quality, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) rich long chain omega-3 that traditionally comes from fish.

The goal is to take research to the commercial stage, producing healthy, long-chain omega-3 oils for the human food market but, more particularly for the lucrative aquaculture industry. The research partners were looking at ways to incorporate omega-3 enriched canola oil into fish feed. CSIRO Food Future Flagship director Bruce Lee said the organisation had been working on the project since the early 1990s. Read more ...

Research: Omega-3 fatty acids pork quality

Canadian researchers found that increasing omega-3 levels through dietary co-extruded flaxseed supplementation negatively affects pork palatability. To clarify the impact of feeding co-extruded flaxseed on carcass quality and pork palatability, 96 pigs (48 barrows and 48 gilts) were fed three different levels of flaxseed (zero percent, five percent and 10 percent of dietary intake) for 76 days.

Carcass quality and meat quality characteristics of pure loin muscle and ground pork (20 percent fat) were evaluated. Fat hardness and belly firmness decreased with increasing co-extruded flaxseed. Pigs fed co-extruded flaxseed levels had higher lean yield and total lean content. Loin from barrows had higher fat content compared to gilts. Co-extruded flaxseed supplementation increased omega-3 content in loin and ground pork. Read more ...

Schaumann present new calf nutrition products

With Kalbi Liquid and Schaumann Energy Protect German specialist Schaumann presents two new products for use in calf drinking milk and calf rearing feed.  High weight gains and a smooth development through to full ruminating ability represent the central aims of calf rearing. Optimal early development lays the foundations for performance in the following beef production or as member of a milking herd.

Kalbi Liquid Protect features a combination of high quality omega-3 and further specific fatty acids, a blend conceived especially for use during the early drinking stage. The high content of valuable omega-3 fatty acids has an anti-inflammatory effect and plays a role in the development of the large mucous membrane surface in the digestive tract, a surface particularly sensitive and especially so during this early stage.
