Germany faces EU criticism over animal feed rules

The European Union has called for Germany to abide by the rule as laid down in accordance with EU regulations on animal feed. The directive on maximum feed quantities of banned substances which regulates on the permitted levels of heavy metals and contaminants in feeds. Substances that are considered as undesirable like mercury or nitrates which is poisonous to humans and animal.

The deadline that all member states should have implemented this directive was November 1, 2010, but Germany has failed to to do this. Lessons learned after the Dioxin scandal in January meant that more stringent regulations and inspections be carried out. Read more ...

Consumer watchdogs did nothing while European Food Safety crashed

A question on everyone lips is where is the help of the consumer watchdog in protecting us from hazards. It seems they have been away, and with the issues surrounding the E-coli outbreak in Germany, where people are getting sick and dying and the so called watchdogs are silent.

In the US they have the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a government agency that acts to protect their citizens. At present the FDA has said that produce in the US "remains safe, and there is no reason for Americans to alter where they shop, what they buy and where they eat.
