Event: VIV Russia video report

Over the past three days we have witnessed the success of another VIV show. This is the first time Grain and Feed Milling Technology has attended in Russia. VIV Russia 2013 is concluding today after three impressive days in the bright and modern Crocus Expo Centre some 25 km from the centre of downtown Moscow.

VIV Russia attracted a growing number of feed exhibitors ranging from the traditional of Buhler and Amandus Kahl to newer exhibitors such as our recognised Chinese exhibitors. In fact, VIV Russia offered several country pavilions including, USA, the Netherlands, Italy, China and France.

There were over 300 exhibitors and some 6,000 visitors in attendance.

GFMT magazine supported the VIV by hosting its CropTech-FeedTech conference, which this time focused on digital technologies and engineering in the feed manufacturing industry. Companies participating in CropTech-FeedTech were Amandus Kahl, Wenger, Muyang, MTech, Cargill-Provimi and Afla Laval. All spoke about how new technologies were changing the feed manufacturing business and leading to greater efficiencies in feed and food production. The meeting was chaired by Roger Gilbert.

Conference programmes aim to boost Russian agribusiness

VIV Russia has announced details of the conference programmes, to be held from Tuesday 21 until Thursday 23 May at the Crocus Exhibition Centre in Moscow. Guus van Ham, VIV Russia project manager  intends to provide an all-in format that will boost the development of the agri-food business in Russia through the parallel programme. “Developments on the Russian market are taking place incredibly fast, and thanks to our partners and specialists we can share all the necessary knowledge with the industry in this country,” states Van Ham.

One of the components of the main conference on 21 May (in conference hall C) is the finalised strategic outlook for the Russian meat industry towards 2020, entitled‘Shaping the industry for the next stage’. This study will be presented  immediately after the official opening by Nan-Dirk Mulder from Rabobank Food & Agri-business Research. This presentation will be followed by a lecture from Shagaida Nataliya Ivanovna, director of the centre of agri-food policy  of the Russian Academy for national economy and public policy, outlining the current status and future challenges facing the Russian agri-food industry. In Russia there is great interest for food safety, animal health, advanced food technology and how to safeguard these processes. Arseniy Poyarkov, managing partner of insurance broker TOP TIME, will speak on ‘Insurance in the Russian Agrifood business: the world practice and Russian reality’.

Food Safety
The afternoon session offers a choice of various subjects that will all compete for the attention of conference visitors. The programme offers in succession ‘Food safety in the Russian agri-food industry’ and ‘Modern technologies for refrigeration, processing and storage of raw materials and food products’.
 

The Dutch Poultry Centre (DPC) – a collective of around 70 suppliers active in the poultry chain – will then present the proven approach that has secured a leading role for the Dutch poultry sector on the global stage. During this dedicated poultry conference (in conference hall F), Irena Tutert- Mikhailova of DPC will introduce a number of specialists in the areas of breeding, transport, animal nutrition, animal health, slaughtering and processing poultry meat. Huge interest is expected from the Russian Poultry Union.

National Union of Swine Breeders
During the afternoon programme of VIV Russia on 21 May, the National Union of Swine Breeders will hold its national annual general meeting.

The central theme for the entire afternoon in conference hall G will be health in the poultry sector. Rosselhoznadzor (the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance in Russia) and Avivak will be organising the Animal Health Conference (Poultry).  The first day of VIV Russia will be concluded with a reception organised by the Dutch Embassy to mark the celebration of 400 years of friendship between Russia and the Netherlands.

Turkeys, Poultry Outlooks and CropTech-FeedTech Conference   

On 22 May, the second day of VIV Russia, the focus will be on the turkey sector. In conference hall C, the morning session is a debate on ‘Key aspects of modern turkey operations’. Industry experts will discuss the opportunities and perspectives for the implementation of modern turkey production and processing technologies in Russia. Guus van Ham : “We are still noticing undiminished interest in poultry in general, but within that segment there is striking growth in the turkey sector in particular. So we have organised a programme specifically for this production chain. 

According to figures from the Russian Poultry Union, Russia’s turkey output in 2013 amounted to 100,000 tons in live weight, while the market capacity is estimated at 400,000-500,000 tons a year.” The conference will be moderated by Albert Davleyev, vice-president of the International Poultry Development Program (IPDP) and president of AGRIFOOD Strategies.

In the afternoon the same venue will host the Poultry Outlooks programme of the World Poultry Science Association (Russian Branch). This seminar will offer valuable information on the latest advances in poultry science and technology and will advance the knowledge and understanding of this diverse industry. At the same time, the French livestock and meat sector will hold a French-Russian Agribusiness Seminar in hall G. This seminar will address topics such as feed ingredients, processing and packaging.

Visitors interested in animal feed production can pay a visit in the afternoon to the CropTech-FeedTech Conference Russia in hall D on the theme of ‘Digital Engineering in the Feed Manufacturing Industry – The debate’.  All the aspects of high-tech feed processing will be discussed in a series of presentations given by specialists. Roger Gilbert from Perendale Publishers will chair the panel discussions.

Animal Health
The third day, 23 May, is devoted to the Animal Health Conference under the auspices of Practivet. This will take up practically the whole day and is being held in conference hall C. The Asti Group and Rosselhoznadzor will meet the growing need for information about the organic sector in Russia by presenting a conference on ‘Organic and biodynamic agriculture, a real opportunity for the Russian market’ in hall F. Project Manager Guus van Ham: “Developments that may take years in other countries progress at enormous speed in certain Russian regions. The interest in sustainable production is making huge advances.”

Event: CropTech-FeedTech to be repeated at VIV Russia

A successful feed conference format to be repeated in Moscow

 The second CropTech-FeedTech Conference-cum-Debate is to be held on the second day of the VIV Russia Exhibition in Moscow - Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 14:00-16:00 - at the International Crocus Exhibition Center.

“This is an exciting opportunity for feed manufacturers in Russia who are interested in learning more about new technologies first hand from the companies supplying up-to-the-minute equipment,” says Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishers and chairman of the two-hour meeting.

“We have chosen a debating format that puts six participating companies on the stage at the same time and asks them to discuss the opportunities digital technology has provided the engineers designing today’s feed manufacturing equipment.”

‘'Digital Engineering in the Feed Manufacturing Industry' will look at the impact digital technology has on the way our equipment is being manufactured and the saving these new processing containing greater digital control options have for feed manufacturers themselves," he says.

“We may think that refurbishing equipment that is 20 years old is the cheapest option in terms of keeping our plants running efficiently, but I think we might be misunderstanding the significance of the developments that have occurred in recent years that may mean replacing equipment is the better option.”

Mr Gilbert, who is the publisher of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine – first published in 1891 and the oldest milling magazine still in print – says an example of this is the energy savings newer, digitally-controlled machines can deliver.

“Not only do we have to enhance the nutritional value of the raw materials we use but we also have to make the feed manufacturing process as efficient and effective as possible in order to improve feed and food safety and that the food produced from our feeds is as affordable as we can make it to the consumer.”

The digital debate will not only be available to those attending the conference itself, where they will have an opportunity to put questions and join in the debate, but it will continue online following the meeting in the form of a discussion group on LinkedIn, the social network for professional.

Companies agreeing to participate in the ‘Digital Engineering in the Feed Manufacturing Industry’ debate include Amandus Kahl, Buhler, Muyang, Wenger among others. The format will invite company representatives to briefly introduce themselves and their products. This is then followed by a half-hour debate on the key issues raised before the audience will have an opportunity to join in with questions and comments.

“We are acutely aware of time, given that many delegates and presenters will not want to be away from the exhibition floor for long. The whole debate is scheduled to take less than two hours from 14:00 to 16:00 on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. I look forward to welcoming as many participants as possible. There will be simultaneous translations services available to ensure you get the most out of the session,” says Mr Gilbert in conclusion.

Event: Revamped VIV Russia 2013

By introducing proven themes such as CropTech-FeedTech and MeatTech to the innovative Russian livestock sector and by unlocking high-quality knowledge, VIV Russia is completely geared up for the foreseeable future.

The event, a sold-out exhibition with more than 340 exhibitors and an interesting conference and seminar programme, is being held from Tuesday 21 May to Thursday 23 May at the Crocus Exhibition Centre, Moscow. This is the seventh VIV Russia event to be held. 

Guus van Ham, VIV project manager says that both the exhibitors and the knowledge specialists are clearly placing their specific focus on value creation in the animal production chain, at the start and end of the chain. “At the end of the chain we are seeing the enormous advances in quality that are currently being made in Russia. Rapid urbanisation is occurring and the demand for fresh, quality produce is growing fast. A much greater range of fresh meat can already be seen in the supermarkets which therefore offers greater opportunities for our suppliers of products and services for slaughterhouses and for the processing and preparation of meat. VIV Russia has also attracted the leading players in basic material for breeders and livestock holders and in the field of animal feed. 

There is major need for high-quality, safe animal feed in the rapidly growing innovative Russian livestock sector and premium brands will therefore be exhibiting in the CropTech-FeedTech pavilion. 

This topic will also be supported with a technical conference that we shall be organising – just like we did during our VIV Asia event in Bangkok – in conjunction with Perendale Publishers,” says Guus van Ham.

Turkey

Of the approximate 340 exhibitors around 30 percent focus specifically on the poultry chain, 30 percent on both the poultry and pork chain, 20 percent specialises exclusively in products for the pork meat chain and 20 percent are exhibiting products for beef, diary and turkey farms. Because of the high level of interest and rapid growth, VIV Russia has a strong focus on the poultry farming sector. Van Ham expects that this sector will continue to grow substantially until 2020. 

Within that, the attention being paid to the production of turkeys is notable and a conference has also been organised for this developing segment. The further development in Russia of pork and beef farming shall continue, though less than the explosive growth seen in the poultry sector. It is for good reason therefore that the World Poultry Science Organisation (WPSA) conference will also be held during VIV Russia.

The advances in quality that are being made by the Russian animal protein industry are also reflected in what is on offer at the exhibition and conference. Van Ham: “In addition to being larger than the last exhibition in 2011, we have also managed to attract a great deal of knowhow and quality. Together with our new main sponsor Boehringer Ingelheim (an international producer of, amongst other things, animal health products) we have also managed to invite a large number of business relations. 

"Fifty thousand invitations have been sent in addition to our normal campaign in the Russian market. We will be welcoming representatives from agricultural organisations, cooperatives, sector organisations, regional authorities, animal welfare services and of course from the veterinary science sector. In other words, a complete show, an exhibition of world standing but still focused fully on the needs and developments in Russia.”

Russia-Netherlands year
For many years the Rabobank has played a leading role in the development of the worldwide agri-food market with its surveys and reports. During the opening conference the bank will be presenting its completed paper ‘Shaping the Russian meat industry for the next stage’. The Dutch Poultry Centre, a joint venture of suppliers in the poultry sector based in the Netherlands, will be sharing knowledge about its successful chain approach. Within the framework of the bilateral Russia-Netherlands year, a special agri-food day is being organised, with meetings being held between leading politicians and the business community. The Russian Ministry of Agriculture and the Dutch Embassy in Moscow will also be involved.  

Animal health 
On the last day of VIV Russia, full attention will be given to the theme animal health, which is also a very important theme in Russia. VIV Russia, together with, amongst others, Rosselkhodnazor (the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance in Russia), has organised a conference on this topic.
