23/08/2013: USW South Korea new director; IFIF's feed report; Evonik launches animal feed center

The U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) recently announced that Dr. Won Bang Koh, country director, South Korea, is to retire on September 30, 2013. Koh will be replaced by Chang-Yoon Kang.

“In the wheat business, relationships matter and Dr. Koh has built an incredible link between U.S. wheat farmers with the Korean millers and bakers who buy and process their crops. We thank him for his commitment to this industry and for his dedicated service over the last 28 years; he will be missed,” said Alan Tracy, president of USW.

Back in July, IFIF launched its "Comparison of Regulatory Management of Authorized Ingredients, Approval Processes, and Risk-Assessment Procedures for Feed Ingredients" report.

Drafted on expert input and support by government feed regulators and feed ingredients associations, the report covers Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, Japan, South Africa, and United States.

The objective of the report is to address similarities and differences among the 7 regulatory jurisdictions on the management of existing feed ingredients, the approval process, and risk management assessment for feed ingredients.

Evonik Industries has opened its first analytical center for animal feed in South Asia. Located in Singapore, the multimillion US dollar investment complements Evonik's other analytical centers in Hanau, Germany and Beijing, China.

European team checks out Northern and desert durum crops

European flour millers and food processors seek out the highest quality wheat each year to produce their premium pasta products. That is why U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) is bringing a European trade team to the United States August 24 - 31 to demonstrate how U.S. durum – the hardest of the six U.S. wheat classes – matches their needs.

The team’s seven members are procurement and technical managers of the leading Italian, German and Portuguese durum millers and pasta processors, all of which import most of their wheat directly. During visits to North Dakota, Montana, Arizona and California, the team will learn about 2013/14 northern and Desert® durum crop outlook and research. Farmers in both the Northern Plains and Southwest grow durum, although there are distinct characteristics between the varieties grown in each region. In each state, the team will hear from wheat researchers, tour grain elevators and visit with farmers in the field.

“The team is looking for information on advances in wheat breeding, improved gluten strength and reduced cadmium uptake and sustainability,” said Rutger Koekoek, marketing specialist, based in the USW Rotterdam Office, who will accompany the team. “The program for this team will provide an up-to-date, firsthand picture of U.S. durum wheat quality and boost their confidence in the reliability and value of the U.S. grain marketing system.”

The European durum trade team is sponsored in part by the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee and the Arizona Grain Research & Promotion Council and funding from market development programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service. USW also collaborated with the North Dakota Wheat Commission and California Wheat Commission on this team.

USW is the industry’s market development organization working in more than 100 countries. Its mission is to “develop, maintain, and expand international markets to enhance the profitability of U.S. wheat producers and their customers.” USW activities are made possible through producer checkoff dollars managed by 19 state wheat commissions and cost-share funding provided by FAS. USW maintains 17 offices strategically located around the world to help wheat buyers, millers, bakers, wheat food processors and government officials understand the quality, value and reliability of all six classes of U.S. wheat.

New! GFMT article: Pest control across the supply chain

These series of two articles focuses on the importance of pest control.

The first article looks at pests in stored grains. Protecting grain and silos from insect infection is an important factor to be aware of. “Clearly millers want high quality, consistent grain,” says Martin Savage, trade policy manager, National Association for British and Irish Millers (nabim), United Kingdom, but this is not always acknowledged by farmers.

We then turn our attention to grains in transit. Mike Kelly, Acheta, United Kingdom explores the  issues surrounding fumigation at ports.

21/06/2013: Development of heat-tolerant grain; ancient Mexican grain; Israeli trade team examines US wheat crop

Washington State University, with support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is set to lead a US$16.2 million effort to develop wheat varieties that are better at tolerating the high temperatures found in most of the world’s growing regions - temperatures that are likely to increase with global warming.

The work is part of the U.S. government’s global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future.

Amaranth, once as fundamental to Central and South American diets as corn and beans, has virtually disappeared after the Spanish banned it because of its use in Aztec human sacrifice rituals.

Now there are efforts to bring it back as a staple in Mexico, for its both superior nutritional qualities and its resistance to the pressures of a changing climate.

The world’s flour millers know they can count on U.S. wheat farmers for a reliable supply of high quality wheat, thanks to export market development programs.

That includes millers in Israel, where only 10 percent of milling wheat can be sourced domestically due to a lack of agricultural land and water for irrigation.

To reinforce that relationship, U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) organised a team of technical and commercial milling managers from Israel to travel to Oklahoma, Texas and Washington, DC, June 22 to 28 to examine the U.S. hard red winter (HRW) production areas and crops, visit export elevators and discuss trade policy.

08/04/2013: Novozymes' new CEO takes office; export cargo report indicates good US corn quality; millers gather for the 2013 division meetings

Peder Holk Nielsen has taken over as president & CEO of Novozymes. Nielsen, who replaces Steen Riisgaard in a planned transition, vows to bring more innovation to the market faster.

“I am proud and honored to lead this great company forward,” says Peder Holk Nielsen. “Novozymes is in a very strong position, and we will continue with our overall strategy. Our success rests on our ability to bring new innovation to our customers, and our ability to find new ways biotechnology can help them improve their products and make more with less. A key focus for me will be to make sure we bring these innovations to the market even faster than we do today.”

Nielsen, 56, has played a central role in the development of Novozymes in its current form. His 28-year career in Novozymes and Novo Industri/Novo Nordisk spans management positions across business development, research and development, quality management and sales and marketing. Up until his appointment as CEO, he served as executive vice president and head of enzyme business from 2007-2013.

The U.S. Grains Council has released the second of its annual USGC Corn Export Cargo Quality Report. Despite the severe drought in 2012 that seriously reduced the projected size of the U.S. corn crop, testing indicated the 2012 crop was superior in quality across a number of key variables to the U.S. 2011 harvest, which was itself a high quality crop.

First released in May 2012, the Export Cargo Report provides the results of tests on corn samples collected during the U.S. government-licensed sampling and inspection process for U.S. corn export shipments. This year’s report indicates that export samples had a higher test weight, lower incidence of broken corn and foreign material (BCFM) and lower moisture as compared to the 2011/12 export samples. In chemical composition, the report observed higher protein levels and lower starch, with oil content also higher.

Continuing the comparison to the previous year’s report, the 2012/13 export samples showed fewer stress cracks and a lower average stress cracks index. In addition, this year’s corn samples have higher true density, a higher proportion of whole kernels and a higher percentage of horneous or hard endosperm, which are all favorable trends.

“To enhance the quality of information we provide to export customers about the quality of the U.S. corn supply, the Council in 2011 initiated a series of annual Corn Quality Reports,” said USGC chairman Don Fast. “These are developed in two parts. First, we publish a Harvest Quality Report that surveys U.S. corn quality at harvest as it enters the marketing system. Then a follow-up report in April, the Export Cargo Quality Report, looks at the quality of the corn crop as it is assembled for export early in the marketing year.”

More than 180 millers, associate members and industry friends attended the NAMA 2013 Division Meetings at the Hammock Besch resort in Palm Coast, FL. James M. Meyer, NAMA chairman and president of Italgrani , USA, addressed the group. During his remarks, Meyer told the group that the depth of the topics covered in the meetings and the participation of NAMA members demonstrated the value of NAMA membership. He also spoke about recent changes in the industry. "We live in interesting times, these changes are coming about because of opportunities within the industry to innovate and deliver quality products to customers," he said.
