The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) recently announced the appointment of Richard Sellers, a veteran employee of the association, as its new senior vice president.

The promotion was announced at the association's October Board meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Sellers previously served as AFIA’s vice president of feed regulation and nutrition.

“Richard really enjoys working with and helping members,” said Jeff Cannon, AFIA chairman. “He gets far and away the most member calls for advice and leadership, fulfilling one of our ‘4 Promises.’ Richard sets the bar for member services.”

Sellers has served AFIA for 22 years providing leadership on legislative and regulatory issues as well as serving as the organisation’s corporate secretary. He leads AFIA’s feed legislative and regulatory activities with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and state feed agencies.

“Richard’s contributions to AFIA are continuous and significant, and our organization’s staff and members appreciate his enthusiasm toward the industry and the challenges it can produce,” said Joel G. Newman, AFIA president and CEO. “Richard is my most trusted advisor on many issues, a team player and well deserving of the promotion to senior vice president.”

Sellers holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Memphis, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas in animal sciences. Prior to joining AFIA, Sellers served as a feed control official for the state of Texas. He is also a registered professional animal scientist with the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS).

The feed industry makes a major contribution to food safety, nutrition and the environment, and it plays a critical role in the production of healthy, wholesome meat, milk, fish and eggs and pets. More than 70 percent of feed in the United States is manufactured by AFIA members. Visit the website here.

22/10/13: Danisco Animal Nutrition explores the benefits of feed additives beyond growth performance

Dr. Ajay Awati, development lead at DuPont subsidiary Danisco Animal Nutrition, will present on the topic “Benefits of Feed Additives Beyond Growth Related Performance for Animal Production” at the Animal Nutrition conference in Brussels on 23 October 2013.

Dr. Awati - a qualified vet and doctor of Animal Sciences with over eight years healthy nutrition experience and an extensive back catalogue of peer reviewed publications - will argue that while the role that feed additives play in achieving growth performance is extremely important, their use can also contribute to broader animal and consumer welfare. He will use specific examples to demonstrate how enzymes, natural betaine, essential oils and Direct Fed Microbials (DFMs) can achieve strong long term profitability for animal producers by improving healthy performance parameters and positively impacting the environment, public health and animal product quality.

His presentation will span the role of feed additives in supporting gut health, reducing dependence on antibiotics, achieving compliance with environmental and food safety legislation, and ultimately in achieving both commercial success and food security.

Dr. Awati commented, “The feed additive business has come a long way since the 1980s, when the emphasis was on using feed additives just to improve production performance of animals. We understand a lot more today about the role of feed additives in animal gut health and others factors that can support healthy development. We can use that knowledge to achieve long term success and profitability for our customers in today’s challenging scenarios and help them feed the world in years to come.”
