“We are looking forward to world-class speakers, innovative solutions and great networking opportunities. And we want to show how our state-of-the-art solutions create sustainable advantages for our customers”, says Johannes Wick.

Bühler will feature more than 30 innovations in the specifically built exhibition area in Uzwil, Switzerland, covering 1800 square meters.

Bühler has identified four core topics that will transform the grain-processing industry and change the way it does business:

  • Nutrition: How can we secure healthy human and animal nutrition for the population of today and tomorrow? Be it gluten-free pasta, alternative protein sources, or the rise in pulses consumption, nutrition trends are important drivers of the food industry and society at large.
  • Food and feed safety: How can we make food and feed safer in todays integrated supply chains? Safety and security of food and feed is becoming increasingly important. We hear of new product recalls every day. State-of-the-art cleaning, sorting and measuring processes coupled with thorough hygienic designs enable the industry to make substantial progress in that field.
  • Sustainability: How can we reduce energy consumption, eliminate waste or source raw materials more sustainably? The top issues are reducing energy and water use, eliminating waste and ensuring sustainable sourcing of key macro nutrients such as proteins for both human and animal consumption.
  • Internet of Things: What does digitalisation mean for our industry? Digitalisation is creating a level of transparency and process control never known before. It has the power to bring consumer and producers together by disrupting existing models, and opens up new ways for boosting performance, efficiency, and quality.
As an industry leader, Bühler assumes its responsibility to anticipate trends and challenges in these four areas, and find sustainable solutions.

“Nutrition, food safety, sustainability and the Internet of Things are drivers that need to be taken into our strategies as we build our industry’s future”, says Ian Roberts, Chief Technology Officer at Bühler.

“It’s going to be exciting to discuss with our industry partners how these drivers will change the way we do business.”

By bringing together the leading players in the grain-processing industry with world-class speakers and innovative solutions, Bühler is one step ahead in processing grains to food and feed.

24/06/2016: AHDB CEO comments on vote to leave EU

http://www.ahdb.org.uk/

Commenting on the UK's vote to leave the EU, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board’s Chief Executive, Jane King, had this to say:

“The AHDB focus remains unaffected by the decision to leave the EU - to equip levy payers with the tools to become more competitive and sustainable.

“Amongst other issues, the decision to leave brings to the fore the need for UK Government to target the best new trading relationships we can for UK food & agriculture both with the EU and other countries.

“AHDB has the skills and expertise to contribute to this work in areas such as market prioritisation, market access negotiations and facilitating relationships between UK exporters and overseas buyers. We stand ready to support the industry in identifying how it can best compete outside the EU.

“These issues will take time to resolve, but AHDB will play a full part in ensuring UK agriculture is a leading player on the global stage.”

24/06/2016: Evonik increases the value of its innovation pipeline by half a billion euros

Evonik Industries is strengthening its innovative power. Last year, the specialty chemicals company increased the value of its innovation pipeline by half a billion euros.

This now places the value of the pipeline in the lower single-digit billion euro range—a figure that is expected to continue growing over the next few years.

Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries Klaus Engel said: “Our innovation campaign is bearing fruit. The constant flow of new products, applications, and business models is a major driver of profitable growth at Evonik. Innovations are to make an even larger contribution to sales and profit going forward.”

In the medium term, the Group aims for products and applications developed in the past five years to account for over 16 percent of sales. Currently, these constitute around 10 percent of sales.

“It’s an ambitious goal,” said Evonik Chief Innovation Officer Ulrich Küsthardt, “and we have taken additional steps in order to meet it.”

Evonik has brought its innovation portfolio into focus, redefined its growth fields, and taken the development of its innovation culture still further.

Mr Küsthardt said, “We have a total of six growth fields, which we expect to contribute over €1 billion in additional sales by the year 2025.”

These fields are in highly attractive markets where Evonik can offer new products and solutions in line with its core competencies. Examples here include sustainable nutrition, healthcare solutions, and cosmetic solutions.

Reorganising these growth fields goes hand in hand with focusing on the innovation portfolio. The streamlined innovation portfolio now includes a more significant portion of larger innovation projects, as well as those to be carried out over the medium and long term. This will allow the company to make more efficient use of resources. Idea competitions and fostering entrepreneurship represent additional ways of improving the culture of innovation.

The planned acquisition of the specialty additives business (the Performance Materials Division) of US-based Air Products is likewise expected to strengthen Evonik’s innovative power in the field of specialty additives. Air Products’ specialty additives business employs excellent R&D personnel and maintains a powerful R&D pipeline.

“We want to become one of the most innovative companies in the world,” said Mr Küsthardt, underscoring the ambitions of the specialty chemicals company.

According to a Forsa survey, nearly 50 percent of those surveyed trust Evonik to meet this goal over the medium term. Over 75 percent of those surveyed see Evonik as an innovative company. Early this year, Evonik contracted Forsa, an independent opinion research institute, to conduct the survey among select target groups, such as customers, investors, politicians, scientists, and employees.

R&D at Evonik 2015

  • R&D expenditures: €434 million
  • R&D expenditures, 2010 – 2015: Average increase: 6% per year
  • Rate of R&D investment: 3.2%
  • Portion of sales tied to products and applications developedn in the past five years: Roughly 10%
  • Development of innovation pipeline value, 2014 – 2015: Increase of €500 million
  • Sales of patented products: 57%
  • Number of new patent applications submitted in 2015: Roughly 260
  • Portfolio of patents and patent applications: Over 25,000
  • Portfolio of pending and registered trademarks: Over 7000
  • R&D employees: Roughly 2700
  • R&D sites: 35

23/06/2016: British and Irish Flour Mills: No2 North Shore Mills Liverpool

https://issuu.com/gfmt/docs/mag1605_w1/14

by Mildred Cookson, The Mills Archive, UK

First published in Milling and Grain, May 2016

As with my last article, I have chosen accounts from The Miller and Milling describing the same mill a few years apart at the start of the 20th century. These two Victorian publications, but with some significant gaps, are held at the Mills Archive.

On 7 August 1899, The Miller reported on a visit to the North Shore Milling Company in Liverpool, run by Mill Manager Mr Edward Cooper and his assistant Mr John Westgate. The firm was established on Boundary Street in 1848 before any other flour-mill of this type had been installed in Liverpool. It was capable of 100 sacks (280lbs) per hour and was divided into three separate and distinct plants, all under the same roof.

Along with new silos, the flour and offal warehouses, grain cleaning plant and workshops for millwrights and carpenters, the whole operation occupied a total ground area of 11,000 square yards. There were also cellars beneath the buildings and the mill yard, with a central warehouse used to store grain and the mill products.

The mill was powered by a triple expansion engine, put in during 1895 by Messrs Yates and Thorn of Blackburn and was capable of exerting 1,400 imperial horsepower, the initial steam pressure being 200psi and on the second cylinder about 80psi. In 1898 Thomas Robinson put in new silos, fully equipped with conveyors, elevators and separators.

By 1899 the mill had seven Haggenmacher plansifters manufactured by Whitmore & Binyon in place. The large-scale grain cleaning department had machines for separating, aspirating, grading, seed extraction, washing, stoning, whizzing, conditioning and scouring and during 1899, they were putting in new machines to improve the condition of the wheat passing to the mill.
