IGC grains virtual conference 2021 - The grains and oilseeds sector

Day one of IGC takes place Tuesday 8th of June, consisting of six sessions; Trade policy, Strategic risk, Trade finance, Climate change, Trade and resilient food systems, and a Regional snapshot of South East Asia.

South and Southeast Asia is a huge, diverse region encompassing some of the world's largest cereal producers, consumers and importers. Amid robust population growth and rising incomes, there is potential for further shifts in consumption patterns in the years ahead. While rice is a staple food for many, milling wheat consumption also continues to trend higher. The Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic slowdown has curbed demand for flour-based foods in some countries. However, wheat import needs remain high, with Indonesia, Bangladesh and Philippines among the world's ten biggest importers.

While animal protein consumption has similarly been affected, growth is expected to accelerate as economic activity improves. The potential development of the aquaculture sector may also present additional opportunities across the oilseeds complex. The session will be an opportunity to discuss the region's changing consumption patterns and the implication for trade. The panellists will also discuss the factors that may potentially limit trade, including logistics and trade finance.

Day two of IGC will take place on Wednesday 9th of June, dedicated to six workshops; Rice, Feed demand, Oilseeds, Regional Snapshot, Cereals, and Pulses.

Pulses are a rich source of protein used both for human and livestock consumption. It plays an important role in food security especially in low-income countries by providing important nutrients at lower cost as compared to meat and milk. With the rapidly growing global population it is important to increase food production. However, it is equally important that food availability is addressed in terms of nutrients and sustainability, in which pulses plays a crucial role.

As the prospects of pulses market looks up, the panellists will discuss how to enhance the market transparency on the sustained demand or fall back, the supply situation and developments affecting the market. Against these backdrop, the IGC's workshop aims to address the role of pulses in food security, production and consumption trend, and an overview of the market outlook.
