Antibiotic use in feed production growing rapidly in Russia

The growth of antibiotic use in feed production is on the increase in Russia according to the Russian Federal Statistic Service (Rosstat). This growth in the use of feed antibiotics in 2011 was 3.41 times higher than in 2010.

Every year antibiotics are becoming more and more popular among farmers in Russia and this trend has also reflected in the price. In 2012 the average price of feed antibiotics in Russia grew by 4.8 percent reaching the level of 1,073 rub (US$ 36)(€27.596) per ton when compared with January 2011.  Read more ...

FDA sued over antibiotics in animal feed

A coalition of health and consumer organisations have filed a federal lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), claiming that the FDA failed to take action to protect human health. The suit alleges that the FDA has known since 1977 that feeding animals low doses of certain antibiotics used in human medicine namely penicillin and tetracyclines could promote antibiotic-resistant bacteria capable of infecting people.

Despite this conclusion and laws requiring that the agency act on its findings, the FDA failed to take any action to protect human health. The lawsuit seeks to "compel FDA to take action on the agency's own safety findings, withdrawing approval for most non-therapeutic uses of penicillin and tetracyclines in animal feed." Read more ...
