7/11/13: China approves imports of Brazilian corn; harnessing the benefits of the cassava crop; John Deere at your fingertips

According to a Brazilian government official, China has agreed to allow imports of Brazilian corn, providing a key market for surging production. 
 

Although China is the one of the world's top corn producers, second only to the United States and should produce 210 million tonnes of the grain this season, it is expected to expand its corn imports to feed its growing middle class.

In October, top international researchers along with decision makers, business people and a range of stakeholders working in the cassava sector met at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria. The meeting called a plan of action on the best way to implement the cassava business in Nigeria.
 

"We need to seize this opportunity and harness the benefits of every part of the cassava crop for national development, income generation, nutrition enhancement and poverty alleviation," says Dr Kenton Dashiell, IITA deputy director general.
 

Cassava is the fourth most important source of food energy in the world after wheat, maize and rice. Both the roots and leaves can be directly fed to livestock or used in producing commercial feed. 

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), "Animals raised on cassava have generally good health, good disease resistance and a low mortality and require few if any antibiotics in their feed."

28/10/13: VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific roll out national livestock exhibitions in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia

VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific Co., Ltd. recently revealed the success of its ILDEX exhibitions that took place in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia this year. 

The 2013 events welcomed more than 200 exhibitors and 10,000 qualified visitors from over 30 countries around the world including Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Netherlands, India, South Korea and Japan.

22/10/13: Dutch Ambassador visits mill in East of England

Her Excellency Laetitia van den Assum, ambassador of the Netherlands recently made her way to the East of England. As part of a fact-finding visit hosted by British leaders in animal feed, BOCM PAULS, Her Excellency visited the Tucks Mill site in Norfolk, UK.

With the ability to produce more than 300,000 tonnes of pig and poultry feed annually, the mill is the largest operated by BOCM PAULS, which is owned by Europe’s largest livestock feed manufacturer, ForFarmers B.V., headquartered at Lochem in The Netherlands. 

The Ambassador was in Norfolk to find out more about the UK agricultural sector and how this successful international business operates as part of a programme by The Netherlands Embassy in London. Accompanied by Dr. Henk de Jong, Agricultural Counsellor and Stella van Bemmelen, Agricultural Assistant, The Ambassador was welcomed by Bert-Jan Ruumpol, Chief Executive Officer, ForFarmers B.V., Iain Gardner, Chief Executive Officer, BOCM PAULS and Nick Major, Corporate Affairs Director, ForFarmers.

Following an introduction to BOCM PAULS by Iain Gardner, chief executive officer, Bert-Jan Ruumpol, chief executive officer, ForFarmers, outlined ForFarmers’ strategy, objectives and reasons for investing in the UK, while Nick Major, corporate affairs director discussed the opportunities and challenges for the UK’s food and farming sector. 17/10/13: Ireland and Ethiopia agri-food collaboration; Brazil predicts record grain harvest; Phytobiotics strengthens team

Simon Coveney, minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Ireland and Tefera Derbew, minister of agriculture, Ethiopia have agreed to work together on agricultural development and agribusiness investments in their two countries. 

This cooperation will include the exchange of information on agricultural policy and the encouragement of bilateral private agri-business collaboration.

Brazil 's grain harvests are estimated to top more than 191 million tons for the 2013-2014 period, the country's crop forecasting agency said.

"Brazil's grain production for 2013-14 is estimated at between 191.9 and 195.5 million tons, up between 2.6 percent and 4.5 percent compared with the previous harvest," said the agency.

07/10/2013: Chicken feed impacts on taste; silo featured in new transformers movie

Chickens on a poultry farm in Pennsylvania, USA have been fed scraps from some of the Cities most prestigious restaurants as part of an experiment to evaluate the impact different feed has on taste.

In 2004, USDA scientists fed chickens soybeans plus either corn, wheat or sorghum, then boiled the meat in plastic bags and fed it to nine blindfolded taste-testers. The testers reported that corn-fed chickens tasted more strongly of meat broth and were less chewy than the wheat- or sorghum-fed birds.

In the upcoming film, the silos will be blown up. Bay's and his crew wrapped filming in Chicago last week, finishing with what one production source called the “mother of all bombs.”

Dr. Hussein Soliman, director of the U.S. Grains Council's Egypt office, retired from the Council effective Sept. 30. He served as a highly successful director in Egypt since 1990 and as associate regional director from 1988 to 1990.
Soliman worked tirelessly on behalf of the Council and its members, while also helping modernize Egypt's livestock and poultry production and supporting the development of aquaculture. Until the recent flood of Black Sea production, compounded by political upheaval in the country, Soliman's efforts and implementation of Council programs established Egypt as a consistent top importer of U.S. feed grains.

01/10/2013: New Delhi calls for wheat flour not grain; innovative oilseed crop; FEED II project

Back in August, the Global Miller reported the launch of a USD$22 billion government welfare scheme set up to provide subsidised wheat to 1.2 billion people in New Delhi, India under the National Food Security Act.

Now, the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India has asked the government to provide wheat flour in place of wheat grain.

Speaking at the food ministers conference in New Delhi, GS Bali, food civil supplies minister said there were no grinding facilities for wheat grain in remote and rural areas of the state.

Canadian oilseed producers will soon benefit from research in innovative oilseed varieties with the help of investments of the Canadian government.

Gerry Ritz, Canadian agriculture minister recently announced news of a new Soy 20/20 project that aims to research and develop new varieties of oilseed crops in Canada.

This investment of CAD$3.7 million will help the Soy 20/20 project develop market-ready varieties of camelina sativa to growers across Canada and will help increase the value of the oil for industrial use.

Community development organisation ACD/VOCA boasts successful work with Ethiopian smallholder livestock producers. 

Thanks to a cooperative agreement worth almost USD$14 million, which was awarded to the organisation on 12th September 2013 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ACD/VOCA has established The Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development (FEED II) project.

Ethiopia's livestock population is the largest on the African continent, with an estimated 80 million cattle, sheep, goats and camels and 32 million poultry. The project will increase livestock and poultry productivity by continuing to develop Ethiopia's animal feed sector.

26/09/2013: Cutting emissions in the livestock sector; Norway invests in crop diversity; South Korea set to double farm exports

According to a new study carried out by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), greenhouse gas emissions produced by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through a wider use of existing technologies and practices.
 

To date, the report represents the most comprehensive estimate of livestock's contribution to global warming.

The Norway government has pledged USD$23.7 million in a bid to conserve and manage the world's most important food crops, focusing on the critical need for crop diversity.

"In just ten years we will have a billion more people at the global dinner table, but during that same time we could see climate change diminish rice production by ten percent with a one degree increase in temperature," said Marie Haga, executive director, Global Crop Diversity Trust.

The agriculture ministry recently announced South Korea's plans to double its outbound shipments of farm and fisheries products to US$16 billion in just five years.

During a government meeting chaired by Park Geun-hye, president of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, explained that South Korea aims to invest nearly 2 trillion won (USD$1.86 billion) by 2017 to develop new products and farming technologies.

The show has been a very good success. Today was a student day and they were amongst agribusiness professionals throughout the halls of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Yesterday, the chairman of UBM (show organisers), the director general of the department of Vetinary Science and the Malaysian minister for agriculture spoke at the opening ceremony. There is lots of interest from the region in challenges and potential of Malaysian livestock, feed and technology.

According to the event organisers, visitor numbers are rising by 15 percent event on event. Most visitors are from Malaysia and southeast Asia.

Our stand is in the UK pavilion and have had a great meeting new and loyal readers alike. The demand is insatiable for our feed focuses, species specific features and people pages.

ILDEX Myanmar 2013 secures position as the largest national livestock exhibition in Myanmar

The 2013 edition of ILDEX Myanmar, held from 12th - 14th September at Tatmadaw Hall, Yangon has now made its mark as the largest national exhibition in Myanmar.

11/09/2013: Industry grain use set to rebound; livestock farmers oppose registration laws; FDA analysis of arsenic in rice

According to the International Grains Council, the amount of grains used to make industrial products, mainly ethanol and starch, will register the largest annual increase in four years during 2013-14. 

This expected rise is a result of record global maize production and a decline in grain prices The IGC forecasts world industrial use of grains in 2013-14 at 320.2 million tonnes, up 6 percent or 17.2 million tonnes from last year's estimated 303 million tonnes.

A livestock association in Oyo State, Nigeria has called for the review of animal farm, hatchery and feed mill registration laws to protect the livestock sub-sector of agriculture.

The association, which comprises of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria, Pig Farmers Association of Nigeria and Animal Scientists Association of Nigeria made the call for the review.

A statement jointly signed by the above associations and many others, expressed concerns that current registration laws did not take the plight of farmers into consideration.

As part of ongoing efforts to monitor food safety, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has posted the results of its arsenic tests in approximately 1,300 samples of rice and rice products. 

While levels varied significantly depending on the product tested, scientists determined that the amount of detectable arsenic was too low in the rice and rice product samples to cause any immediate or short-term adverse health effects.

These results are part of the FDA's ongoing efforts to manage the possible arsenic-related risks associated with rice products in the US marketplace.

05/09/2013: Grain loss in China; Alltech Global 500 held in Ireland; Japan imports feed wheat

A report compiled by the American Chemical Society (ACS) that looked at food waste in the People's Republic of China has concluded that approximately 19 out of every 100 pounds of grain produced in the country goes to waste. 

The report, which was published in Environmental Science & Technology identifies the problem of food waste with an estimated one-third to one-half of food produced worldwide lost or wasted from farm to fork. Estimates suggest that the United States wastes about 40 percent of food crops. According to estimates, China needs to feed 21 percent of the world's population, harvesting just 6 percent of the worlds water resources and 9 percent of arable land.

According to Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, the country will import 59,350 tonnes of feed-quality wheat, and 3,000 tonnes of barley for livestock use. These figures are the result of a simultaneous buy and sell (SBS) auction that closed earlier this week.

The ministry had sought 120,000 tonnes of feed wheat and 200,000 tonnes of feed barley in the tender. It is seeking the same amounts for each grain in a similar tender that will be held on September 11, 2013.

Wilbur-Ellis Company’s Feed Division, a marketer and distributor of value-added animal feed ingredients in North America and Asia-Pacific, announced today that it has hired Jonathan F. Wilson to serve as managing director of its Feed Asia business. Wilson has lived and worked in the region for over 20 years, most recently as chief operating officer of Gold Coin Group, a large Asia-based organization specializing in animal nutrition, genetic development, and commodity trading businesses.

Forty years ago, the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) inaugurated a partnership with Taiwan by setting up an office in Taiwan. Since then, Taiwan has become a major player in the market for U.S. coarse grains. 

The Council has worked with Taiwan in trade, policy and the marketing of U.S. agricultural products. Through their partnership, Taiwan and the U.S. have progressed in areas of livestock industry development; value-added products; biotechnology and food safety.

Sitting in an office in Washington, D.C., or in a combine in Nebraska, it can be difficult to grasp the impact of an office and a staff halfway around the world that has been on the job for U.S. coarse grains and co-products producers for 40 years. The U.S. Grains Council, however, recently had the chance to recognize just such contribution as the Council's Taiwan office reaching this milestone.
On July 1, 1973, the Council inaugurated a partnership with Taiwan through the establishment of an office in Taipei, Taiwan. Forty years later, Taiwan has grown into a consistent top five market for U.S. coarse grains, and the Council enjoys widespread support from our buyers and partners, and high respect throughout Taiwan.

Jill Arnott, a senior member of the customer care team at R-Biopharm Rhône, has been appointed new customer service manager.

Arnott will head the department which oversees all aspects of order handling and delivery and will be responsible for maintaining the company's reputation for speed and efficiency.

Originally from Auchinloch, Scotland, UK, Arnott takes over from Robert Muir, who has retired from R-Biopharm Rhône after 16 years.

Livestock feeding manufacturer Keenan has partnered with British telecommunications company Vodafone to supply a machine-to-machine (M2M) solution to improve nutritional data analysis.

Keenan manufactures machines which feed livestock. As well as the hardware, the company also provides a nutritional information service.

Farmers short on storage this year might consider tarping grain or using grain bags. But neither is good for long-term storage or high-moisture grain according to Dr Chelladurai Vellaichamy, a PhD biosystems engineering student at the University of Manitoba, Canada.

Vellaichamy and his colleagues have been researching canola storage in grain bags for three years, with support from the Canola Council of Canada and Growing Forward.
