FEFANA has welcomed Calpis Co., Ltd, a Japanese company producing beverages and probiotics for human and animal use as its first associate member. 

Caplpis Co's., products are regularly exported and distributed in the European market. Didier Jans, Fefana secretary general commented, "We warmly welcome Calpis as our first associate member. Yhis is certainly a sign of how complex the global market is and the need for companies outside Europe to get closer to those working within the European fodd and feed law framework."

Russia’s food safety organisation has announced there is no threat to the country's grain following outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in the cereal-growing south.

Russia detected two incidents of foot and mouth in the North Caucasus area and one in the Krasnodar region according to the agency, known as Rosselkhoznadzor.

A new report by the FAO has been issued as researchers and governments continue plans to feed the world by 2050. Estimates indicate food production will need to double in order to keep up with demand. One of the biggest challenges future food producers face is the search for sustainable protein sources. 

The idea of eating insects may rapidly become a reality. Farming insects requires significantly less water, waste, and space than most of the current meat sources. Insects are also high in nutrients and rich in protein.

The Brazilian animal feed additives market is growing quickly thanks to a burgeoning population with higher disposable incomes and a taste for pork, beef and poultry. This trend will continue as the development of new additives add value to customers.

The market earned revenues of $1.30 billion in 2012 and it is  estimated to reach $1.59 billion in 2018. The research covers enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, mycotoxin adsorbents, prebiotics and probiotics.

The Goa Meat Complex at Mharvasado-Usgao, is refuting allegations that they are starving their bulls. 

The NGO will now make a written request to the high court for a direction to the government to provide them with enough cattle feed.

According to a UN nations report, global cereal prices could ease over the coming year. It is predicted that 2013-2014 will see balanced food commodity prices.

04/06/2013: Brazil grain farms; Bangladesh eyes local hybrid rice; African food security

Brazil is poised to unveil $65bn plans to boost its agriculture through measures including a splurge on grain storage and a minimum price for cotton, although it may be sugar producers who benefit most.

Brazil's farm minister, Antonio Andrade have revealed Brazil's annual "harvest plan" for 2013-14, ($63.4bn-65.6bn) to support the sector, a rise of some 20% year on year.

Bangladesh has tapped a local agricultural firm to develop a new variety of hybrid rice that can spur hybrid rice production and exportation in the South Asian country, BusinessWorld reported. 

Agriculture minister, Matia Chowdhury, said in a statement that she is “interested in potential expansion of a collaboration with SL Agritech Corp. (SLAC) after the Filipino-developed SL-8H made a mark in Bangladesh’s hybrid rice sector, accounting for 20 per cent of the seed supply.”

The United Nations reports that the world produces more than enough food to feed its population. Meanwhile, 75 percent of the 900 million people facing hunger worldwide are farmers or farmworkers.  Rather than supporting local farmers in their efforts to produce and sell food locally, US food aid policy currently mandates that food supplied to stave off hunger around the world be purchased from US farmers and shipped overseas by US shipping companies.

Poona Merchants' Chamber on Saturday announced that food grain and grocery shops in Pune Market Yard as well as in Peth will open from Monday. The shops had been closed for the past eight days due to the traders' strike called against implementation of Local Body Tax.
Ajit Sethiya, president of the chamber, said, "We met the state government representatives in Mumbai on Friday. There has been a consensus on as many as 20 major changes to be made in LBT that the traders had sought earlier."
