5/11/13: New edition of Milling Directory published

The 22nd edition of the International Milling Directory (IMD) is online and ready to be dispatched in print to subscribers of the magazine Grain and Feed Milling Technology (GFMT) and others throughout the worldwide milling industry.

"This year's offering is going to be great success with our subscribers and readers as it has a whole new look, is more compact and has several new equipment guides. This is the industry' most functional and comprehensive directory and a must for anyone sourcing equipment, services or products in our industry," says Roger Gilbert of Perendale Publishers, which publishes the IMD and GFMT magazines. 

The IMD sells for UK£85 and can be bought by e-mailing Tuti Tan, Perendale's subscriptions manager at tutit@perendale.co.uk

Of course the directory is both online in a page-turning format and also in a web application, adds Mr Gilbert.

"We want our directory to be available to everyone in the industry. We have linked it to our 'Events Register' which allows users to identify IMD companies exhibiting at the industry's major global events in a matter of seconds.

"It's important if you're in the market for new or replacement equipment and services to check out several companies offerings in order to narrow down your selection. Attending exhibitions is a big part of that process. We want to support our readers by providing a printed directory that integrates with our web application to quickly identify which companies will be at which exhibitions so decisions can be more informed."

In fact, the early pages of this year's directory contain a comprehensive list of milling events such as conferences and exhibitions for 2013-14.

Our online offering is free-of-charge. "But I would highly recommend the printed version to all those thinking about new or replacement equipment and services," says Mr Gilbert.

25/10/13: Constraints threaten EU feed and livestock producers

The EU market requirements for feed materials, estimated at approximately 200 million tonnes/year and representing 15% of the global feed market, have started to deviate substantially from other continents because of societal and political dynamics, resulting in ever increasing constraints and specifications for our feed supply, says Ruud Tijssens, new president of The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) and director of corporate affairs in Agrifirm Group, based in The Netherlands. He succeeded Patrick Vanden Avenne, who has been FEFAC’s President since 2010, in June 2013.

"These developments have a direct effect on feed security for the long-term which could undermine the EU livestock industry’s competitiveness. The EU holds very different views and standards compared to other world regions when it comes to food safety, genetic modification of crops and sustainability. At the same time, the EU remains highly dependent on imports for the supply of several critical commodities, such as protein-rich feed materials and essential minerals, e.g. phosphates. 

In his Federation's e-Newsletter published today, Mr Tijssens says, "The EU feed industry is faced with an increasingly complex supply of feed materials when doing business with its trading partners, as our companies operate on the same global market with powerful upcoming markets such as China and India, who don’t demand the same specifications. The EU already lost preferential buyer status for many key exporters as a result. 

"Feed business operators have to comply with very strict rules as regards EU food safety. 

"This led to the situation where the EU feed industry had to deal with an aflatoxin crisis this year because a large consignment of maize from South-Eastern Europe was deemed unsuitable for feed use, though this very same batch was eventually exported and processed as cattle feed in the United States because of more lenient standards. 

"In addition, increasing political and market demands for sustainable feed material supply are creating new pressures for our sector seeking to meet the societal demands. Our sector already successfully demonstrated that innovative improvements in resource efficiency go hand in hand with environmental gains. 

"However, all the above-mentioned deviations create an unlevel playing field on the global market and may pose a serious threat to the competitiveness of the EU livestock industry in the long term." 
He is calling on national governments and European institutions to work together with the whole EU feed and livestock chain in the current round of negotiations on Free Trade Agreements in order to secure access to the global market of feed materials. 

FEFAC does recognise and support the objective laid down in the new CAP to reducing our dependency on imports by supporting Research and Development, Innovation and Investment in the local production of vegetable protein and the safe feed use of processed animal protein, including insects, and former foodstuffs. 

However, the EU needs to establish a policy framework on food and feed security which identifies access to feed materials as a key strategic goal. After all, we want to maintain a sustainable livestock industry meeting societal demands, while creating added value and jobs in rural communities by taking advantage of the growing global demand for animal products, he adds.

11/10/13: ICI acquires elevator from Cargill; The great global food gap; Calata corp's own brand animal feed

Agribusiness leader, Interstate Commodities, Inc.(ICI), has purchased Cargill’s grain elevator in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Cargill has operated the Lincoln facility since 1999, when it acquired Continental Grain Company's worldwide commodity marketing business
 
"ICI was founded in 1947, purchasing distillery grains and selling to the feed industry throughout the eastern United States,” said Greg Oberting, CEO. “In recent years we have been focused on expanding through value-added service in agricultural commodity transportation and logistics. Acquiring the Lincoln facility is part of that strategy.”

Although not strictly milling related, in light of global rising food prices, here’s a thought-provoking piece to kick start your Friday. 
 
According to an online survey by leading global information provider Nielsen, 85% of global consumers report that rising food prices will soon start to impact their choice of grocery products.
 
In the survey, 14% of global respondents indicated that they would soon buy more loose, unpackaged, unbranded cereal (such as rice, wheat and grains). 11% said they would stock up on fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, and 8 percent said they would buy more canned fruits and vegetables.
 
Back in May, British newspaper the Daily Mail published Snapshots of families' weekly groceries from around the world, highlighting the ever-increasing food gulf between nations.

Philippine-based Calata Corporation has announced plans to distribute its own brand of animal feed made by the Chinese agribusiness operator, New Hope Group.
 
New Hope is one of the largest feed producers in China with an annual production capacity of 26.6 million tons. It is also one of the largest suppliers of meat, egg and dairy product in China, providing more than 200 million poultry, and half a million tons of milk each year.
 
"We are creating our own brand that will be manufactured by New Hope,” Joseph Calata, company chairman noted in a text message to reporters. “We will distribute this to the whole Philippines," he added in a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

08/10/2013: Monsanto to acquire Climate Corporation; world food prices lowest in three years; professor of animal production

Chemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation, Monsanto has announced its agreement to acquire weather data company The Climate Corporation for approximately US$930 million. 

The acquisition will combine The Climate Corporation’s expertise in agriculture analytics and risk-management with Monsanto’s R&D capabilities, providing farmers with access to more information about the many factors that affect the success of their crops.

World food prices fell for a fifth month this September, the lowest level in three years.

According to the FAO, the decline in food prices was due to a 6.1 percent grain drop, while all other components of the index rose. The International Grains Council has forecast a 943.2 million metric ton production in the 2013/14 period, a jump from 862.9 million tons in the previous period.

Hanne Damgaard Poulsen from the Department of Animal Science at Aarhus University, Denmark has been appointed professor with special responsibilities (mso) in environmental impacts of animal production.

Poulsen has been employed at the Department of Animal Science since 1984, first as a research assistant then as a senior scientist. 

Aarhus added that with Hanne as a professor, the department’s expertise in reducing the environmental impact of livestock production will become more visible.

AFIA to host seventh annual pet food conference

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) in partnership with the Poultry Protein and Fat Council will sponsor the seventh annual Pet Food Conference on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, the first day of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). The conference will be held at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC), Atlanta, USA from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

“We are excited to kick off IPPE with AFIA’s annual Pet Food Conference, which attracts more than 200 participants each year.” said Leah Wilkinson, AFIA director of ingredients, pet food and state affairs. “The seminar covers everything from product claims, marketing and nutrition to regulatory and technical aspects of production and is a great networking opportunity.”

03/10/2013: Second day of US government shutdown; Brazil tops US in corn exports; Haiti's cereal production

The US Agriculture Department (USDA) has stopped its flood of statistical reports on the second day of a government shutdown.

Inspections of meat are considered among essential services that will continue regardless of the shutdown.

Depending on the length of the shutdown, the USDA may be forced to delay the release of its monthly crop estimates, which are due on October 11, 2013.

"We are going to miss the October crop report, if they shut down too long," said Dan Basse, president of AgResource Co. "If you don't have the October crop report, that's really the big one."

According to Doane Advisory Service, Brazil has officially passed the US as the world's largest corn exporter, accounting for more than 25 percent of world wide total trade.

If this expansion in Brazil's corn sector continues, it may have a big impact on the US corn market.

The exporter numbers are a result of the expansion of the safarinha or double-crop corn production which accounts for more than half of the 2012-13 crop.

Reporting on Haiti's 2013 spring cereal harvests, the FAO has reported that this season resulted in roughly half of the annual production of cereals, mainly maize and sorghum, but only a third of the rice output.

Despite below average precipitation during the sowing period, a lack of tropical storms and flooding in the country has resulted in a recovery of maize yields.

27/09/2013: Wheat port access approved by ACCC; USA and Japan organic trade partnership; land management practices

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has accepted Emerald Grain’s wheat port access undertaking agreement after feedback from industry counterparts.

“Emerald Grain is in favour of competition at ports and in the Australian grain market. Competition at Australian ports and grain storage facilities means a better return for Australian growers,” said John Warda, Emerald Grain Group general manager supply chain & operations.

The new undertaking will be in place from October 1, 2013.

The United States and Japan have announced that as of January 1, 2014, organic products certified in Japan or in the United States may be sold as organic in either country.

This partnership will give US farmers' and processors' the opportunity to access the growing Japanese organic market, adding to a growing organic industry and supporting job creation and business growth globally.

A report conducted by the international Economics of Land Degradation initiative states that the economic value of global land is undervalued and commonly determined by immediate agricultural or forestry market values.

There are several ways to combat land degradation, including reforestation, sustainable agriculture and establishing alternative non-agricultural livelihoods (i.e. eco-tourism). 

The report suggests that if agricultural land productivity remains at its current levels, an estimated 6 million hectares of land (roughly the area of Norway) would need to be converted to agricultural production every year until at least 2030 to satisfy growing demand.

13/09/2013: Vitol new face in grain world; Canadian crop science; Sahel food security situation

Vitol, a Dutch-owned energy and commodity trading company and the world's largest independent oil trader, recently took part in a port capacity shipping auction held by CBH. As a result of the auction,

Vitol has secured about 400,000 tonnes of capacity, emerging as a new player in the grain world.

Vitol announced plans to begin trading in global grain markets this year.

The Canadian Government is supporting new research in crop science that will be of great benefit to farmers. 

Working closely with Gerry Ritz, Canadian agriculture minister, Pierre Lemieux, Canadian parliamentary secretary and Dave Mackenzie MP, Oxford, Ontario announced that an investment of CAD$7 million for the Canadian Field Crop Research Alliance to lead a research project that will  help producers better compete in global markets.

The FAO has recently warned that about 11 million people in the Sahel, Africa are still severely food insecure. Poor families have used up their food stocks and are now facing high food prices.

Despite an appeal to raise US$113.1 million this year to support almost 6 million vulnerable people in the Sahel, only US$19.4 million has been received.  

The FAO is now appealing to the international community in the hope of increasing funding to aid the most vulnerable farmers and herders in the region south of the Sahara.

Canadian Acquistion strenghtens Spiroflow's global position

13/08/2013: Philippines GM rice approval; Kiotechagil strengthens its International team; China mill representatives visit North Dakota

Scientists in the Philippines are preparing to submit a genetically modified variety of rice to the authorities for biosafety evaluations. Although national regulators will have the final say, the scientists claim the new 'golden rice' could be in fields within a year.

Supporters have praised the submission with hopes it will help the 1.7 million Filipino children who suffer vitamin A deficiency - which reduces immunity and can cause blindness.

Some campaigners however, argue that the new GM rice threatens the Philippine's staple food and is not the answer in the fight against malnutrition.

UK biosecurity company, Kiotechagil, recently announced it has strengthened its international team.

Dr Sá, who has joined Kiotechagil as a sales and technical consultant, was educated in Brazil and has a PhD in animal science from the University of Viçosa. He has a strong technical background in both monogastric and ruminant nutrition and previously worked with Ajinomoto where he was technical manager for their Brazilian operation.

Rene Noteborn has also joined Kiotechagil as regional sales manager Europe.

Rene studied animal sciences at Wageningen Agricultural University in Holland, the Netherlands, before embarking on his career. Most recently Rene worked for De Heus International where he has held several positions around the world in account and product management which have given him broad experience and knowledge in feed production.

Representatives from four Chinese mills have been in North Dakota, USA, learning about the production prospects of the 2013 hard red spring wheat (HRS) crop and price outlook. The trade team also visited North Dakota State University (NDSU) to learn more about the HRS breeding and quality programs and visited the Northern Crops Institute and a local elevator shuttle facility.

Drawing to a close today, it is hoped the visit helped the trade team build a broader knowledge of the US wheat marketing system and the benefits of US wheat for specific Chinese end-products.

The first organic grain drying and storage facility has opened in Avinurme, Estonia, helping to bridge the gap in a scarce organic production chain.

It is hoped that the new facility, which will dry and store grain from all over the country, will help increase the share of the organic grain products marketed in Estonia.

The website will provide background information on Maizall, including a memorandum of understanding between its allied organisations, ABRAMILHO (Brazilian Association of Corn Producers), the National Corn Growers Association, and the U.S. Grains Council.

It will also provide news releases, including presentations, articles and studies on biotechnology and modern farming practices as well as access to various resources on food security, global biotech adoption and links to government and non-government organisations.

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has issued a call to researchers for a new encyclopaedia-style guide to managing pests across arable and field crops. 

The proposed publication would act as a reference source on managing pests and would benefit all growers and agronomists.

Proposals to conduct the work must be sent to AHDB by 30th August 2013. The new publication is  planned to launch at Cereals 2014 in Cambridgeshire, UK.

05/08/2013: Grain bin town; contaminated whey protein found in animal feed; Cargill to buy Joe White Maltings

A couple in North Platte, Nebraska, USA have created their own antique grain bin town. 

The town, which is set up on the couple's own property, consists of fifteen octagon-shaped grain bins, six of which are filled with antiques for sale.

“This has to be a one of a kind in our state,” said Lisa Burke, convention and visitors bureau executive director. She added, “this is a fabulous thing for our town, one more thing for people to see and do here. People will see a totally different aspect of Nebraska here.”

Fonterra, a New Zealand based dairy company have announced that some of its whey products have been found to contain a toxic bacteria that can cause botulism, a potentially fatal paralytic infection.

Fonterra claim that Australia's exposure to the contaminated whey protein has been restricted to animal feed. Gary Romano, managing director of milk products at Fonterra, stated that one of their customers, a livestock feed company, identified and contained the suspect product before it hit the feedlots.

Cargill Australia have announced that Glencore International has accepted its offer to purchase Joe White Maltings. 

The sales agreement is subject to regulatory approvals and the transaction is expected to be complete prior to the end of 2013. 

“The addition of Joe White Malting will complete Cargill’s global footprint in all key barley production areas and enable us to better serve our global and leading regional brewers in the region,”said Doug Eden, president of Cargill’s global malt business.

24/07/2013: Canada's canola industry; new Russian grain centre; animal feed additives report

The Canadian federal government recently announced a CAD$15-million investment in canola research which will help drive the industry to new heights, says Patti Miller, Canola Council of Canada (CCC) president.
 

The $15 million in new research funding, combined with industry contributions equals a total investment in research and innovation of more than $20 million over five years.
