6/11/13: VIV organise North African trade mission; Australia's grain storage study; Biomin celebrates in Vietnam

In light of its upcoming European event, leading global trade show organiser VIV will be embarking on an iconic networking road show that's set to span North Africa.

"Interacting directly and on a personal level with governments, the top of the business world, decision-makers in the animal production chain and showing them what we can do. And immediately inviting all these people to come to VIV Europe in Utrecht, the Netherlands in May 2014. That is the purpose of our North African mission", says Didier Nech, VIV agent and promoter.

On the Road
VIV's road show will incorporate master classes and a preview of the European event. At the end of November, the road show will be travelling to Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

According to VIV, the aforementioned countries are on the threshold or in the middle of a major turnaround. It is hoped that the road show will allow VIV's exhibitors and knowledge specialists to aid in the development of North Africa's animal protein sector.

"These are countries with a total of around 175 million consumers, where a lot of investments will be made in the coming years in response to the growth requirement. Especially for the poultry sector, but for the production chains of cattle, goats and sheep there are also enormous opportunities", says Nech.

3 Western Australian organisations have announced plans to conduct a collaborative study focusing on the impact of grain storage techniques on wheat seed viability, vigour and germination says Australian Broadcasting Corporation, (ABC Rural).

The study, which will be conducted by the Mingenew Irwin Group, the Kondinin Group and the University of Western Australia (UWA) is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). During the 3 year study, a number of samples of grain will be taken in 3 different storage situations: a cleaned sterilised silo, a non-treated silo and an aerated silo.

Christian Nansen, UWA associate professor says as well as looking at storage techniques and the effect on seed, ways to control insects in stored grain by keeping moisture levels down will also be explored.

Back in September, the Global Miller reported on the news of Biomin's new premix facility scheduled to open in Southeast Asia.

Well, following on from final preparations, Biomin officiated the grand opening of its second premix plant this week, a state-of-the-art facility located in Binh Duong province, Vietnam. The impressive 4.7 hectare, fully-automated plant is capable of producing 60 tonnes of premix per day at full capacity.

"Vietnam is an important market for us, and with the addition of the new facility, we will achieve a five-fold increase in total capacity. This also allows us to export to other countries in the region, including Cambodia and Myanmar," says Phuong Nguyen Quang, chief operating officer of Biomin Vietnam.

Biomin announces premix facility opening in Vietnam

Biomin has confirmed the importance of the Vietnamese market with the completion of its second facility in the country. Scheduled for a grand opening on October 2, 2013, the impressive 4.7 ha premix plant will be fitted with a micro dosing system and will house a laboratory with several cutting-edge technologies, including a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system.

Since its inception in 1997 in the Asia Pacific, the business of Biomin has grown steadily in the region, especially in the Vietnamese market. At the World Nutrition Forum held in 2012 in Singapore, Biomin promoted the concept of NutriEconomics®– achieving sustainable yet profitable farming in animal nutrition. In keeping with the NutriEconomics® concept, walls of the new facility are built of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks to conserve energy, and solar panels are also fitted to produce energy for the plant.

Biomin places a strong emphasis on providing quality solutions and excellent customer service. It has invested extensively in the laboratory services at Binh Duong, with the purchase of a LC-MS/MS system. “This will enable Biomin to provide the highest possible level of nutritional and mycotoxin analytical services for its customers. On top of that, the LC-MS/MS will also support the Biomin Mycotoxin Survey Program, strengthening the position of Biomin as the market leader in this field," says Jan Vanbrabant, CEO, Biomin Asia Pacific.

With strong growth in the demand for premixes and the existing Biomin plant in Hanoi running at full capacity, there was a need for a second premix facility. Construction on the Binh Duong plant commenced officially on May 12, 2012. “Vietnam is an important market for us, and with the addition of the new facility, we will achieve a five-fold increase in total capacity. This also allows us to export to other countries in the region, including Cambodia and Myanmar. With a fully-automated production system that has a capacity of 6.5 tonnes per hour, and the cooperation of international partners such as Buhler, BASF, and Adisseo, Biomin is confident that the new Binh Duong facility will meet the highest standards of the industry,” explained Phuong Nguyen Quang, COO, Biomin Vietnam.

Biomin expects to welcome over 250 VIPs, customers and government officers at the opening ceremony of the facility on its grand opening day, taking place on October 2, 2013. The opening speech will be delivered by Erich Erber, founder of Biomin and Mr Le Thanh Cung, president, Binh Duong People’s Committee.

A new facility is also being developed in Wuxi, southern Jiangsu province, China, as part of the regional expansion plans of Biomin.

Cargill Animal Nutrition and Purac collaborate on joint development of bio-based feed ingredient solutions

Cargill’s Animal Nutrition business and Purac, a subsidiary of CSM, announce their collaboration in the development and commercialisation of bio-based animal feed solutions. These solutions promote stronger growth and better feed conversion in suboptimal conditions in poultry production while at the same time have the potential to significantly reduce the usage of antibiotics. A first commercial product, Aloapur®, will reach the market in July of this year.

Under the collaboration, Purac, world market leader in lactic acid and lactic acid derivatives, is focusing on technology development and production of Aloapur®, while Cargill Animal Nutrition’s Provimi business, a leading global premix, specialties and feed additives supplier, is focused on application development and commercialisation of the product.

Aloapur®, a bio based animal feed solution for the improvement of the general health of animals, has been developed and patented by Purac. Aloapur® is based on Lactylates and has been developed for the first time in animal nutrition and has demonstrated to significantly improve growth and feed conversion in poultry and turkey production in particular in suboptimal conditions. The efficacy of Aloapur® has been extensively tested and demonstrated in both scientific research as well as actual production farms by Purac and Cargill.

Commercial production will start in July in a newly built production facility at the Purac site in Gorinchem, the Netherlands.

Cargill brings its animal nutrition expertise and global footprint to the partnership. Cargill’s Provimi business will develop the application and offer Aloapur® to customers to help them improve animal health and nutrition. Cargill Animal Nutrition is committed to selecting and developing innovative solutions that can significantly improve animal nutrition.

Marco Bootz, vice president chemical & pharma at Purac, comments, "CSM is developing into a leading provider of bio-based ingredients and solutions. Our collaboration with Cargill is fully in line with our strategy to develop commercially attractive bio-based alternatives using renewable and sustainable resources. This new technology, Aloapur®, for animal health is based on our core competence in lactic acid derivatives and emulsifiers. We believe that this technology has the potential to significantly reduce the usage of low dosage antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed, without negatively impacting production. Cargill, the world leader in animal feed, will market Aloapur®, opening up a world of opportunities."

“The use of lactylates in poultry feeds is an exciting new concept in animal nutrition,” said Scott Ainslie, vice president of strategic marketing and technology at Cargill Animal Nutrition. “This technology offers a promising, innovative nutritional solution to improve broiler and turkey health and growth in suboptimal conditions; and Cargill’s Provimi business is perfectly positioned to help bring this solution to the marketplace.”
