Cargill open new grain silo in South-Western Romania

In South-Western Romania Cargill official Martin Schuldt, head of Cargill’s business in Romania, opened a new grain silo in Drobeta Turnu Severin the opening ceremony was attended by Marius Balu, president of Mehedinti county council, local authorities, Cargill employees and customers. Finnish feed company admitted using cow parts in their feed

Saarioinen's a Finnish feed company has been using cow parts in its animal feed production, and they have admitted that they been doing that for years. Cow intestines has been banned by officials as there are fears of it carrying mad cow disease or bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The problem was first brought to light by a Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) inspector in January. A an internal probe has been launched into how potentially dangerous cow parts came to be mixed into feed. Read more ...

Butterball closes plant due to high feed and fuel costs

Butterball LLC the largest turkey company in the US, has been forced to close one of its plant in Colorado at the end of this year. The reason for its closure has been attributed to high feed cost and fuel costs, the company has said that it will focus on its other plant more efficiently. The company also pointed out that over the last five years its feed costs have increased on average US$65 million (€48.036 million) per year. Read more ...

Bio fuels research moving onto other feedstocks

The US department of agriculture announced a payment of US$3.1 million (€2.267 million) payment to UC Davis for research into alternative bio fuels. The research led by researchers at the University of Washington, well the US biofuels industry are mainly focused on corn-based ethanol, there is interest in alternative feed-stocks like tree trunks and limbs, leaves. This new grant, and another for the same amount to be led by Washington State University, will begin to fill in those blanks. Read more ...

China's grain production expected to increase for the 8th year

China's is expecting its grain production to increase yet again but its also will see price rises, these moderate price rises are due to the struggling supplies as production tries to keep pace with growing demand. China will produce more than 550 million tons of corn,rice and other grains this year. A recent PhD graduate Dr Marije Oostindjer whos thesis was called Learning how to eat like a pig, was key to her research on finding out how piglets learn and how we can use this knowledge to facilitate the weaning process. Reducing hay to save waste in cattle feed

Recent research has shown that around 43 percent of hay is lost during feeding times when cattle are fed around a large round hay bale. One theory is to feed them smaller amounts more often. A suggestion by a University of Missouri Extension specialist Tim Schnakenberg "producers can minimise losses by following good management practices and rethinking the method by which they feed their stock". Charoen Pokphand, agrees loan for US$250 million for expansion

Indonesia's largest animal feed and processed chicken manufacturer Charoen Pokphand, has secured US$250 million (€183.952 million) loan from foreign and local banks to finance its proposed expansion. The expansion includes a new plant to be built in Cirebon, West Java, as well as a possible plant in Bali. “The company is aiming to expand its feed mill production capacity from four million tons per year to five million tons per year,” the president director said. Taiwan signs deal with US on trade

The US grains council and the Taiwan's feed industry association signed a letter of intent, dealing with the purchase of US corn and corn products. "For US farmers, Taiwan is a long-established and deeply valued customer and partner," said US Grains Council Past Chairman Terry Vinduska, who signed the letter on behalf of the Council at a formal ceremony in the US Capitol. Sri Lanka: Feed miller arrested

After an investigation by the consumer authority in Sri Lanka, it was found that some rice millers in Polonnaruwa were found to be producing animal feed using rice that was fit for human consumption. Under Sri Lankan law, it is illegal to utilise rice that is fit for human consumption in animal feeds, it is illegal to sell or stock animal feed made this rice. After a raid it was found that 20,000 kilos of animal feed was made from a stock of good quality rice. Read more ...

Chinese toxic feed crackdown means safer pork

After the mass crackdown that the Chinese government enforced on the illegal fat burning drug, that was being used as an additive in pig feed. The Chinese ministry of agriculture (MOA) announced that more of the country meat products are safe and free of clenbuterol. Animal feed production started by Chinese firm in Vietnam

In the Northern Bac Giang province of Vietnam, a Chinese company has started production of animal feed. With an investment of US$10 million (€7.405 million) and an annual output of 400,000 tons this is the largest Chinese funded feed manufacturing operation in Vietnam. Pakistan floods destroys animal feed storage

Lakha village in the Dadu district in Pakistan
In Pakistan's Dadu district there have been several areas of flooding, several area's remain under at least four foot of water, this is destroying stored animal feed that was gathered for the livestock. Usually farmers store the animal feed and this can be sent to other areas and cities, but the recent rains has caused major flooding and destroyed the stocks of animal feed causing heavy financial losses. Kerala Feeds Ltd welcomes construction of new hi-tech feed plant

A new hi tech feed plant is under construction for Kerala Feeds Ltd, Kerala's Chief Minister Oommen Chandy welcomes the new construction of this hi tech cattle feed factory. The new plant will be located in Thiruvangoor and will take about 20 months to complete, the plant will be able to prduce about 300 tons of feed on a daily basis. Vietnam is one of the worlds fastest growing economies and an important market for the US. Danish claim that US use six times more antibiotics

In a presentation in Chicago, Illinois a danish food official said that the US uses approximately six times more antibiotics to produce 1-kg of meat than Denmark. Henrik Caspar Wegener, director of the National Food Institute in Denmark, said during a panel session at the Chicago conference, “My main advice for the US is that all antibiotics used on animals should be given only with a prescription. That’s not the case at the moment. Antibiotics are medicines. They should be prescribed by someone educated to make that decision.” Read more ...

Lenders discrimination against sustainable agriculture

The Center for Rural Affairs, and the Iowa Farmers Union, with financial support from the Leopold Center have released a report that show discrimination where sustainability in agriculture is concerned. The report shows how lenders and insurance companies distinguish between and treat conventional farming and sustainable and ranchers. Rising feed costs could collapse Russia's livestock industry

Up-to the middle of 2011 feed mills were using stocks of cheap feed yielded in 2009, but as predicted by experts the cost of grain has increased and by October the price difference could reach 50 percent compared to last years prices. Official statistics show that prices have risen for feed from last year by 22-30 percent, this year grain prices had increased by 50-75 percent. Vietnam set to over take Thailand the global leader in rice sales

With a new government in Thailand the prices of rice climbed and that was in part because Thailand was pushing the prices up. The US department of agriculture has forecast that Thailand's rice exports will drop by 20 percent to around eight million tons in 2012. This drop in exports will be because Vietnam may well over take Thailand's as the number one global exporter. Read more ...

Allow your corn to dry in the fields if you can

This years weather has been difficult, not a typical year. But Iowa State University agriculture engineer Charles Hurburgh recommends leaving the crops out a little longer to dry out, but only if you know the stalks can hold on until the combine rolls. "If you determine that particular fields have stalk rot, which is prevalent this year, harvest those fields early and dry the corn. At current corn prices, drying is preferable to grain loss. At US$2 (€1.466) per gallon for propane, the drying cost in an average dryer for one point of moisture is equal to about 0.25 percent field loss, with US$7 (€5.13) corn". Read more ...

Mycotoxin detoxifying in animal feed

Researchers from Virginia Tech and Agricultural Research Service USDA, have been able to reduce the toxicity of mycotoxin in barley (dried) for use in animal feed using a newly developed yeast that is transgenic. In the production of ethanol grains are dried and can be used for animal feeds but a fungal pathogen sometimes found in barley can cause lethal toxins called mycotoxin. But research carried out using newly developed transgenic yeasts used during fermentation helps to modify the mycotoxins to a less toxic form. Read more ...

CP one of the largest agricultural conglomerate in Thailand is looking to expand its operations at present its has five plants, but by 2014 they want to have 10 plants, says Jittisart Jittiloet Sakulchai, the general manager of CP Vietnam Livestock Corporation. The Family owned Hunter Grain accused J Swap of breach of trading partnership and conspiracy.
