30/06/2016: From our latest magazine: A maths formula offers global impact for millers by improving flour yield from wheat

https://issuu.com/gfmt/docs/mag1607_w1/20
The latest edition of Milling and Grain is online now.

This month, you can read about ground-breaking research by a scientist at a UK university which could very well be a game changer for the way wheat is milled:

Research by a University of Huddersfield scientist could aid the development of new strains of wheat that yield high quantities of extra-nutritious flour.

Professor Grant Campbell is a leading expert in cereal process engineering and is based in the University's School of Applied Sciences at the University of Huddersfield in the UK.

The milling of wheat and the complexities of its kernel are central to his work.
Now his latest co-authored article analyses the different breakage characteristics of hard and soft wheats.

It has been discovered that in certain strains, an intermediate layer may crumble more readily, so that it becomes easier to separate the hard outer shell of bran from the endosperm - the flour - which can also remain united with an inner layer named 'aleurone'.

30/06/2016: Official opening of a new facility dedicated to Actisaf® production in Voronezh

http://www.lesaffre.com/
Voronezh (Image: Nikolay Petrov)
Lesaffre is continuing to diversify in the field of animal nutrition, health and well-being and is investing in a new facility dedicated to the production of Actisaf live yeast at Voronezh Drojjie production plant in Russia.

On Thursday 23 June 2016 in Voronezh, Mr Viktor Logvinov, the Vice-Governor of Voronezh oblast, Frédéric Modoloni, Minister Counselor of the French Embassy in Moscow, Antoine Baule, CEO of Lesaffre and Frédérique Clusel, Phileo General Manager officially opened the second Actisaf production plant in the world.

Lesaffre Voronezh Drojjie - the most important yeast manufacturing plant in Russia
Constructed in 1952, the Voronezh Drojjie plant was acquired by Lesaffre during the summer of 2011. Voronezh Drojjie has been able to adapt and increase its global production capacity in line with the Russian market‘s increasing demand. More than 1 billion rubles have been invested in the modernisation and development of the plant.

This new facility, which commenced production at the start of this year and was officially opened today, is mainly dedicated to the production of live yeast for animal nutrition and health.

This new development extends the range of yeast that is already produced at the site. The extension allows Voronezh Drojjie to achieve annual production exceeding 20,000 tons of dry yeast, becoming the largest yeast manufacturer in Russia and one of the most important in Central and Western Europe.

A new manufacturing site dedicated to Actisaf® production
To better support its customers and to facilitate the development of high-quality animal feed in Russia, Phileo-
Lesaffre, for the first time ever, is transferring its unique technology knowledge to produce Actisaf in Russia.

Previously, Actisaf was only manufactured at Lesaffre Marcq-en-Baroeul’s production plant in France. 400 million rubles have been invested in this new industrial equipment.

Frédérique Clusel, General Manager of Phileo, explains “We know that this huge country – Russia - has the potential and the desire to significantly increase its livestock production. Previously Actisaf® was imported but now, with our complete range of feed additive solutions and local production, we are well-placed to become the key reliable partner for progressive Russian farmers. We decided to invest in Voronezh – an area of Russia with strong dairy and meat production – and to support this investment, we will recruit local experts in each species to better serve farmers. Our team is here to help farmers with high-value technical support to help them drive their business performance forward.”

Actisaf®, a concentrate of generosity
Following advanced research within the extensive Lesaffre collection of live yeast strains, Actisaf® is produced with a unique patented process which delivers an excellent ability to withstand manufacturing processes, especially its record granulation thermostability at temperatures up to 92°C. Backed up by rigorous science, this unique probiotic can be relied upon to enhance the health and performance of ruminant and pig breeding and is now the standard solution for modern farming.

Actisaf® offers far-reaching benefits for farmers and industry experts. Both food quality and safety are assured – factors that are fundamental to the future of sustainable production.

In dairy cows, Actisaf® preserves the balance of the cow's rumen ecosystem by acting in a complementary manner on the rumen biotope and microbiota. Actisaf® strengthens the reductive conditions in the rumen. It therefore encourages stabilisation of the rumen pH, preventing the risk of acidosis. This global action at the level of the rumen ecosystem helps to increase the digestibility of the feed. By encouraging good rumen function on the farm, Actisaf® maximises milk production and milk quality. It is regarded as the reference product in modern livestock farming.

In pigs, Actisaf® acts, on one hand, on the balance of the gut microflora and, on the other hand, helps to limit local and systemic inflammation caused by pathogenic bacteria present in the environment. In gestation and lactating sows, Actisaf® improves immune transfer to piglets, while significantly improving litter size and body weight gain of piglets pre-weaning. When used in the post-weaning period, it reduces the risk of diarrhoea. Actisaf® also acts on feed efficiency, for better animal productivity particularly in the fattening period.

29/06/2016: Relief as glyphosate stays on the shelf

http://ec.europa.eu/index_en.htm
Image: Chafer Machinery
A last-minute move by the EU Commission to ensure farmers can continue using the widely-employed weedkiller glyphosate has been welcomed.

Conservative MEPs Anthea McIntyre (West Midlands) and Julie Girling (South West and Gibraltar) said the move to prevent the herbicide being removed from shelves from one day to the next was "sensible and responsible".

They were commenting after the Commission granted glyphosate a licence for a further 18 months - just hours before its EU approval expired. Attempts to grant glyphosate a longer approval of several years from June 30 hit deadlock after the French Government lodged objections and other nations abstained.

Despite advice from the EU's own scientific experts that the weedkiller did not present any significant risk, some EU politicians mounted an organised opposition to renewed approval on the basis of an historic World Health Organisation report suggesting a possible link to cancer.

The Commission’s proposed extension will allow for further complementary studies to be carried out by the EU’s other scientific body - the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) - to determine whether glyphosate requires reclassification from a safety perspective.

Miss McIntyre and Mrs Girling today issued a joint statement saying:  "Farmers will be hugely relieved that this important tool for protecting their crops is still available to them.

"We maintain that the EU should listen to the science and not be swayed by scaremongering. We hope that these further studies confirm that glyphosate is safe for use, so we can put this discussion to rest and farmers can get on with their work.

"A ban on glyphosate could have a huge impact on farming in the UK and across Europe, so any such decision should only be taken if there is compelling scientific evidence that such drastic action is absolutely necessary.

"While everyone's attention was on the referendum result, the clock was still ticking on glyphosate - so this stay of execution is sensible and responsible. It will allow us time to examine and further test the scientific evidence to come up with a sound decision further down the line."

28/06/2016: Compound feed production in 2015 up 0.6 percent on previous year; downward trend expected in 2016

http://www.fefac.eu/
Compound feed production in 2015
According to data provided by FEFAC members, compound feed production in the EU-28 in 2015 reached 157.3 million tonnes, which is 0.6 percent more than in 2014. While cattle feed production dropped by 0.7 percent, pig feed and poultry feed grew by respectively 0.6 percent and 1.2 percent. Poultry feed thereby further enforced its leading position in EU feed production.

Feed costs remained low and even decreased compared to 2014. This was due to a good 2015 cereals harvest in the EU, both in terms of quantity and sanitary status, and a largely sufficient supply of oilseed meals globally, especially soybean meal. This compensated the still decreasing pigmeat quotations to a certain extent, while pigmeat production continued to increase by close to 4 percent in 2015.

As regards cattle feed, the picture is as usual very contrasted across Europe, depending on weather conditions for forages production. The effect of the lifting of the quota regime, with a +2 percent milk delivery in 2015 vs 2014, was hardly visible for the compound feed industry EU‑wide, with the exception of Ireland and the Netherlands.

Finally, poultry feed production continued to grow, boosted by an increase per capita in meat consumption (+2.7%), which primarily benefited to poultry meat (+4%). As a consequence, poultry feed consolidated its position of leading segment of EU compound feed production, now well ahead of pig feed.

Poland and Spain have been the only well performing Member States among the largest EU producing countries, with annual growth close to 4 percent. Germany recorded a significant decrease (-2.9%) after 5 consecutive years of growth, whereas the UK was set back by more than 4 percent, especially because of bad results in poultry feed. All other major producers – France, Italy and the Netherlands – saw limited changes in their production records.

Germany and Spain are shoulder to shoulder in their position as leading EU countries in terms of total compound feed production, well ahead France.

Forecast for 2016
FEFAC market experts are relatively pessimistic concerning industrial compound feed production in 2016. They do foresee the upward trend on poultry feed demand to persist, though at a slower pace than in 2015 (+0.5%), but also a significant reduction in pig feed demand (-1.5%), in line with expert forecasts on pigmeat production in the EU. Overall, this would lead to a 0.7 percent decrease in compound feed production in 2016 vs 2015.

On the feed materials side, concerns regarding the quality of the EU cereals harvest 2016 due to the humid and cold weather conditions in several EU Member States may result in higher supply of feed wheat. However, prudence will be required as regards the sanitary quality. Concerning proteins, after the lower than expected South American soya harvest 2016 combined with a higher global demand for soybean meal, the attention is put on the US soya harvest forecast, which is relatively good for the time being.

28/06/2016: The need for farmers to adapt to suit the commercial climate of the day

https://issuu.com/gfmt/docs/mag1605_w1/34

by Chris Jackson, Export Manager UK TAG

First published in Milling and Grain, May 2016

Last month I wrote my column as I travelled through India and then on to the Philippines. Since then, my travels have continued through Australia, Vietnam and Thailand where I witnessed agriculture go from one extreme of subsistence farming to another of agriculture on an industrial scale.

In Australia, you are also reminded that farming is totally weather dependent. For instance, the rains have so far missed parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland where livestock are starving and reliant on food deliveries of hay and straw from New South Wales just to keep alive vital breeding stock; with all other animals having either been slaughtered early or died from starvation.

For stock farmers, losing livestock is one of the worst blows that you can suffer when they are nurtured like family. For arable farmers and our urban cousins, this is a fact not understood and can be devastating. It matters not the breed of the cattle, sheep, goat or pigs, their breeding is always a lifetime’s commitment.

Recently, we saw the efforts of the New South Wales farmers who were attempting to alleviate the pressure on their colleagues by sending the biggest ever peace time convoy of trucks laden with forage to the area.

In southern Queensland, the harvest of sorgum is now getting started I think earlier than usual so we hope that the yields are not depressed. In central New South Wales there is a different story where rice yields are proportionate to the amount of rains that they have experienced. However, where we see the price of water exceed the price of land, without water crops or animals cannot survive as we saw earlier in this article.

27/06/2016: The best of both worlds

First published in Milling and Grain, May 2016

Several years ago, one of the first presentations I made had the title “Back to the Future or Forward to the Past?” To this day, I still wonder which direction we are heading.

The past is everywhere it seems. On the consumers’ side, there is a growing desire for food and farming like they believe it was made in the past. Call it authentic, natural, and old-fashioned or any other name that appeals to consumers, many people certainly have the past in mind when they make their food choices.

This nostalgia of things that never really were, as I call it, is not a new phenomenon. It comes in cycles and it is more a reflection and a reaction of a general malaise about how the present world is perceived. Of course, at the same time, consumers expect a level of food safety that today’s technology offers.

They would not want to buy the same old food borne diseases. They want the best of both worlds; it is a fair expectation. We long for what we fear is about to be lost Sometimes we want to part with the past and embrace novelty and progress, sometimes we long for what we fear is about to be lost.

The further away from the equilibrium the pendulum goes, the harder it swings back in the other direction, and often it swings back too far. The polarisation of the debate on food and farming is just another expression of the magnitude of the pendulum swings. The back and forth between future and past is not just in consumers markets, though.

There is hardly any week without some research paper on farming by some university “rediscovering” what our forefathers knew from experience about sustainability and preserving resources, although back then the science was not advanced enough to explain what they knew.

27/06/2016: BinMaster's heavy duty capacitance probe stands up to heavy materials and high temperatures

http://in25app.com/clicks.php?coid=6614314&cid=5591&url=36918
This heavy duty HD capacitance probe is solid and 1' in diameter, so it's resistant to bending and extremely durable.

It can be used for low or high level detection in heavy materials such as coal, aggregates, grains, or other materials with a high bulk density. It's suitable for use in temperatures up to 500°F (260°C), making it appropriate for challenging applications such as fly ash or clinker.

The new stainless steel BinMaster HD probe is attached to either the standard ProCap I or hazloc ProCap II capacitance probes. It comes in a standard 8' length and features a PRO-Shield to guard against false readings from material buildup on the probe. The wide diameter of the probe increases the surface area for maximum sensitivity and performance.

http://in25app.com/clicks.php?coid=6614314&cid=5591&url=36918
Like all BinMaster capacitance probes, the HD probe offers fail-safe operation and 'Quick-Set' calibration. Plus, they provide interference-free operation - working far below the RF level of 9 KHz at just 6 KHz - and will not interfere with two-way radios or other equipment operating in the radio spectrum.

The ProCap I and ProCap II capacitance probes feature a triple-thread, screw-off cover that allows easy access to internal components and an FDA-recognised powder coat finish.

The housing also has dual conduit entries to simplify wiring and installation. A dual time delay feature allows the user to set flexible time delays up to 30 seconds for covered and uncovered conditions.
