The Argentine Federation of the Milling Industry has announced they will be participating in Expo Aliment.AR in November

The head of FAIM, Diego Cifarelli, announced that the entity will be participating in Expo Aliment.AR in November, where they will receive 350 buyers from around the world.

After years of being out of the world circuit, the wheat industry has shown its strong dynamism. In a short time Mr Cifarelli has made up much of the lost ground and has returned to playing in the major leagues. From the 27th place that Argentina occupied as a world exporter of wheat flour in 2015, in just over a year it has managed to settle in 4th place and intends to continue climbing positions.

In pursuit of this objective, and with the intention of achieving new international markets for its products, the Argentine Federation of the Milling Industry (FAIM) has decided to participate in Aliment.AR, the B2B exhibition of food, beverages and trends that will take place from November 8 to 10 in Buenos Aires.

'We have a huge amount of products to offer to different latitudes and we want to show that we are capable to produce what the world needs. We have high expectations and companies that not only manufacture flour, but also oil, pasta, cookies or gluten have already committed their participation, 'says Mr Cifarelli, president of FAIM, who is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 350 international buyers who have already committed to the first edition of the exhibition.

'We are a sector made up of almost 200 companies that are in a position to produce what two and a half Argentines consume. That is why looking at the export market is an obligation for us,' says the head of the business association that brings together wheat mills from across the country. After being marginalised from international trade for a long time due to the closure of flour exports, the volume of sales outside the country has grown by 35 percent in the last year and the goal in the short term is to become the second wheat flour exporter in the world, behind Turkey, which leads the field.

Until now, Argentine's production of wheat derivatives has as its main destination as the neighbouring countries and the region. But currently from the FAIM they have intensified the negotiations to recover other markets that in the past had Argentina as a reference and that in the last decade were lost. 'They already know us and know what our merchandise means. We are working together with the State to be able to be a little more competitive and to be able to access new countries. For example, in the coming weeks we are traveling to Nigeria and Egypt, 'says Mr Cifarelli.

With a fully consolidated market in a very short time, and figures of almost 12 million tons of wheat and 1 million tons of wheat flour exported in 2017, the next great challenge for the sector is to add added value to its productions. "This year we will surely be taking the first steps in that sense with all the second industrialisation industries," confirms the businessman, who confesses that this task always entails much more effort due to the protection policies that many countries exercise over their industries.

The companies that participate in the Argentine Federation of the Milling Industry not only manufacture wheat flour, but most add value and are integrated into other industrialisations such as the production of artisan bread, sliced bread, packaged bread, frozen bread, fresh pasta, dry pasta, pastry, fractionated cookies in containers for home consumption and other food products. "There is no pantry in the world that does not have a farinaceous-based product, so we have enormous potential and we are very excited to be able to participate in the exhibition," says the Federation executive.

In this context, Mr Cifarelli hopes that the realisation of Aliment.AR will become a true springboard for the sector and will be able to seduce the hundreds of international and local buyers who visit the fair, give greater visibility to the companies and products that are part of the Federation and continue increasing the volume of exports.

"We are convinced that we can be the supermarket of the world and we want to be part of an exhibition that shows all the capacity that our country has to feed it," Mr Cifarelli concluded.
