19/02/13:India's rice revolution; maize is a good value feed; Monsanto patent investigation

India's rice revolution. In a village in India's poorest state, Bihar, farmers are growing world record amounts of rice – with no GM, and no herbicide. Is this one solution to world food shortages? asks the Guardian.

Maize is still the best value forage for dairy producers according to an analysis of Maize Growers Association data carried out by Grainseed Ltd in the UK. Despite poor weather last year, maize delivered a tonne of drymatter for nearly 20 percent less than grass silage.

A report by the Center for Food Safety and the Save Our Seeds campaigning groups has concluded that Monsanto sued small farmers in the US to protect its patent rights on GM seeds. Monsanto
has been accused of trying to prevent farmers from replanting crops they have produced from Monsanto seeds.
The report, called Seed Giants vs US Farmers, traced Monsanto law suits and found 142 patent infringement suits against 410 farmers and 56 small businesses in more than 27 states. The firm has won more than $23 million to date.

US organic farmers sue Monsanto on GM seeds

A class action law suit has been filed by the US Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association against Monsanto, which manufactures most of the world’s genetically modified seeds and pollens. In a written statement, Monsanto spokesman Thomas Helscher said "Monsanto never has and never will sue a farmer if our patented seed or traits are found in his field as a result of inadvertent means.”

But Gianni Ortiz, founder and director of Farm Assist Productions, a nonprofit advocacy group for small farms, says she is aware of nearly 900 court cases in which Monsanto won damages from farmers because their crops contained plants grown from its genetically modified organisms. Read more ...

EFSA updated its scientific advice on gm maize 1507

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) updated it scientific advice on the environmental safety of genetically modified maize 1507. The panel on genetically modified  organism (GMO) from the EFSA has concluded that maize 1507 (Pioneer) is unlikely to raise a safety concern for the environment as long as the correct procedures and management measures are implemented during cultivation. The Panel recognised the need to update its previous scientific opinions in light of recent advances in methodology and new scientific literature and thus initiated a reassessment of its environmental safety. Record sowing of Biotect corn through out Europe because of the corn borer moth

Europe's top adherents of genetically modified seed Spain and Portugal have increased sowing of biotect corn to a record high this year because of the corn borer moth. Both countries have increased sowing of the GM seed Spain by 4.7 percent and Portugal by 50 percent. These increases were caused by last years high pressure of the corn borer moth, its larvae chews through the grain stem , but the Monsanto GM seed is resistant to this. Read more ...

Polish agricultural minster wants EU ban of GMOs

The Polish agriculture minister is demanding a total ban on Genetically Modified Organisms throughout Europe, by asking for this total ban he would get GM crops banned to. The previous Polish government passed into the countries law a ban on GM foods and seeds. This ban was not in keeping with the line of the EU.

He is proposing to completely prohibit cultivation of GM plants but also feed and food that has been genetically modified, these comments comes days after he criticised President Bronislaw Komorowski for vetoing a bill on the registration of GM seeds. Read more ...

Unregulated GMO's safe or not?

Everyday see the advancement of science and technology, a new genetically modified organism (GMO), a new discovery, but where GMO's are concerned, who actually regulates them. A big question is are they safe, many view GMO's as a major environmental and human health concern.

What few people realise is that federal law governing GMO's is so minimal and vague that biotechnology and chemical companies are literally declaring that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has no legal right to regulate their products, and the agency is complying. Read more ...

Corn that requires less water and yes its genetically modified

A new strain of corn has been engineered to thrive in drought conditions, the future issues with crops is based around climate change. Drought is expected to become more common in the near future, as a result of that for the last several years 3 major international agribusiness, Monsanto, Pioneer and Syngenta have been chasing the idea to engineer corn to tolerate drought conditions and thrive.

"Working on something like drought is more complex than introducing a trait like insect resistance," says plant breeder Bob Reiter, vice president of biotechnology at Monsanto, the company seeking approval for the new strain". Read more ...

United States keen to encourage GM wheat

The US has confirmed its commitment to GM crops, as a means of feeding the future growing population. Director of global policy analysis with the United States Department of Agriculture, Mike Dwyer, says GMOs are needed to dramatically increase yields on land already used to produce food. He says "GM corn and soy crops have proven themselves in the US, but wheat is trailing behind. "You know, right now, there's no one producing GMO wheat," he said. Read more ...

Australian organic Farmer sue neighbours over GM crops

After the agriculture authority stripped him of his organic status, an organic farmer in Australia has started legal action against his neighbour because he claims that GM cranola was blown onto his farm from his neighbour. This is believed to be the first case of it kind in Australia concerning GM crops and organic farmers.

Steve Marsh lawsuit against Micheal Baxter is demanding compensation over the loss of his status which was lucrative and had taken him 10 years to build up his organic food business and this was devastated by the loss of his certificate, with about 70 percent of his land now unusable for organic farming. Africa slowly accepts genetically modified crops.

Slowly Africa is beginning to accept genetically modified (GM) crops. Kenya has become the forth country to accept gm crops as from July 1, 2011 the restrictions on GM maize and other various gm products will end. This opens the door to importation and production of gm crops.

But lobby groups opposed to gene alteration, noting health concerns such as development of mutations and allergic reactions in humans, said they plan to oppose the law. "We are going to hold a demonstration in Mombasa to boycott importation and consumption of GM,

" said Betty Mwasia an officer at Telum Kenya, a lobby group that advocates organic farming. Mombasa is the port city and gateway into east Africa. "We are also considering a court injunction to stop the GM shipment," she said. Read more ...

Australian GM label call criticised

A senate hearing in Australia has been told that opposition to genetically modified (GM) crops is being driven by “a non-scientific, fact-free, alarmist and scaremongering” minority in the community. The Senate Community Affairs Committee is investigating proposed legislative amendments that would compel food producers, manufacturers and distributors to label food for presence of GM materials.

But Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) chief executive, Steve McCutcheon, said the legislation was looking to establish a labelling standard inconsistent with existing arrangements and for a purpose unrelated to food safety. FSANZ did not approve food items, including GM foods, that were unsafe, and it was already mandatory for GM food labelling so shoppers could make informed choices. Read more ...

India benefits of non-GMO demand Japan and European Union

India’s oil meals exports to Japan in FY11 jumped more than two-fold to 1.259 million tonnes as the latter prefers non-genetically modified (GM) crop produced by India, according to an industry body. India had shipped 475,000 tonnes of oil meal (used as cattle and poultry feed) in FY10 fiscal, according to the Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors Association (SEA).

He noted that India is basically a non-GM crop producer when it comes to oil seeds, while other major producing nations like Argentina, the US and Brazil largely produce GM crops. Among the shipment of oil meals to Japan, the soy meal export have increased the most. Soy meal shipments in FY11 have increased by 169 percent to 1.241 million tonnes compared to 461,000 tonnes in the year-ago period. Reads more ...

EU lawmakers in favour of widening GM crop bans

European Union governments will be able to restrict or ban GMO crops on a case by case basis under measures approved by the European Parliament’s all-party environment committee earlier this week. Critics of GM crops say herbicides used in conjunction with the plants promote widespread weed resistance, or super weeds.

EU countries should also be free to ban GM crops to protect local plants, habitats and alternative farming practices such as organic production, the European Parliament's influential environment committee said in a vote in Brussels. Read more ...
