5/11/13: Bearish outlook for oilseeds and oil-meals predicted for 2014

Hot off the press from HighQuest Partners

Last week's 8th Annual Oilseed and Grain Trade Summit played host to renowned industry analysts and executives who provided key market insights into the agribusiness world.

Amongst the industry experts present at the event in Minnesota, USA were Thomas Meilke, editor of Oil World and Carl Casale, CEO of CHS Inc., the nation's leading global agribusiness owned by farmers, ranchers and cooperatives across the United States.

In light of the 9 billion strong population projected in 2050, the subject of food supply was a prevalent topic of conversation.

Outlining the need to double current food supplies, Philippe de LapĂ©rouse, managing director of HighQuest Partners - hosts of the summit - spoke of the factors effecting world food production. These included:

 - a growing urbanisation of the global population, which is putting pressure on available arable land for crop production and increasing reliance on processed foods;

 - fast growing middle classes in developing markets which are shifting from grain to protein-based diets; and

 - constraints on the supply of crops due to competition for water with other uses, climate change, and a slow down in yield increases of the major crops.

LapĂ©rouse also pointed out the link between the agricultural sector and the energy markets, touching on the biofuel policies implemented in major markets around the world.

Additionally noted was the lack of human capital needed to support a growing agricultural sector as a result of generational transfer in both developed and developing markets, and inadequate capacity building in developing markets.

Mielke echoed these concerns over the challenges of beingable to meet future demand for food crops, noting that agricultural land has become a limiting factor worldwide with land values having more than doubled within the past six years.

“In conclusion,” said Mielke, while predicting a bearish outlook for 2014, “while underlying market demand for oilseeds and meals is strong in the near-term, we need to focus more on higher yields and global solutions to the volume and logistics problems the industry is facing.”

More than 600 attendees were present at the Oilseed & Grain Trade Summit. Hundreds of traders and importers flocked to the summit to take advantage of the excellent networking opportunities. Buyers from several countries, including Singapore, Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan were also in attendance.
Next year, HighQuest Partners will launch the first ever European Oilseed Congress.

Oilseed Congress Europe/MENA will take place in Barcelona, Spain from the 5-6 February 2014.

01/10/2013: New Delhi calls for wheat flour not grain; innovative oilseed crop; FEED II project

Back in August, the Global Miller reported the launch of a USD$22 billion government welfare scheme set up to provide subsidised wheat to 1.2 billion people in New Delhi, India under the National Food Security Act.

Now, the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India has asked the government to provide wheat flour in place of wheat grain.

Speaking at the food ministers conference in New Delhi, GS Bali, food civil supplies minister said there were no grinding facilities for wheat grain in remote and rural areas of the state.

Canadian oilseed producers will soon benefit from research in innovative oilseed varieties with the help of investments of the Canadian government.

Gerry Ritz, Canadian agriculture minister recently announced news of a new Soy 20/20 project that aims to research and develop new varieties of oilseed crops in Canada.

This investment of CAD$3.7 million will help the Soy 20/20 project develop market-ready varieties of camelina sativa to growers across Canada and will help increase the value of the oil for industrial use.

Community development organisation ACD/VOCA boasts successful work with Ethiopian smallholder livestock producers.

Thanks to a cooperative agreement worth almost USD$14 million, which was awarded to the organisation on 12th September 2013 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ACD/VOCA has established The Feed Enhancement for Ethiopian Development (FEED II) project.

Ethiopia's livestock population is the largest on the African continent, with an estimated 80 million cattle, sheep, goats and camels and 32 million poultry. The project will increase livestock and poultry productivity by continuing to develop Ethiopia's animal feed sector.

24/06/2013: Biotech scientists world food prize; new phosphite formulation; French farmers animal feed protest

Three pioneers of plant biotechnology have been awarded the World Food Prize for their genetically modified crop work.

The World Food Prize Foundation, a private nonprofit foundation, refused to shy away from the controversy surrounding genetically modified crops that organic food advocates say are harmful to people and the environment.

Omex has launched its new phosphite formulation Trigger, which claims to give an establishment and rooting boost to cereals and oilseed rape crops.

Applied from growth stage 14 in cereals and two to four true leaves in oilseed rape, the product has been independently proven to increase root weight, the group said.

A square in central Paris was turned into a farm yard when farmers brought along sheep, horses and cows in protest against the price of animal feed.

Farmer groups say their incomes have been slashed due to the hike in costs which they are unable to pass onto food manufacturers.

English: A Field of Oilseed Rape. The bright yellow flowers of Oilseed Rape have become a common sight in arable areas in the spring. As well as providing vegetable oil, this crop makes a good 'break crop', improving the soil for wheat or barley in the following years. Oilseed Rape cannot be grown frequently in any field due to the build up of diseases in the soil. This may change however if farmers are allowed to plant disease resistant genetically engineered crops. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

20/06/2013: Nibulon plans to increase grain harvest; merchandiser buys grain to make feed; consistent food labelling in UK

Nibulon, one of the largest producers and exporters of grain and oilseed in Ukraine, plans to harvest over 400,000 tonnes of grain in 2013, compared to 300,000 tonnes in 2012.

Well-fed hogs are healthy hogs, and quality grain is one way the swine become suitable to take to market, such as Smithfield Foods. Finding the food, however, is the work of David Hull from Williamsburg.

“I buy all of the grain we use to produce feed at the Waverly mill of Murphy-Brown LLC for their hogs,” said the merchandiser. “We’re the largest hog producer in the world. Waverly alone uses about eight million bushels of grain annually, and on the East Coast it’s about 80 million bushels annually.”

A new consistent system of front-of-pack food labelling is to be introduced in the UK, the government says.

The system, which provides nutritional information through colour coding, will be used to show how much fat, salt and sugar and calories are in each product.

As the system is voluntary, only 60 percent of foods will be covered.

17/06/2013: India can't stock food grains for more than a month; new grain analyser; monsoon boosts crop hopes

A recent report by the Committee on Public Undertakings, headed by Congress’s Jagdambika Pal, of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on the assessment of food grain management across the India.

The report highlights the states’ lack of capability to manage operational stock of food grains - a majority of which is wasted due to insufficient storage facilities. Out of 31 states and Union territories (UTs), the report says only eight of them have storage facilities available for 120 days.

Australia's CBH Group is piloting a new grain analysis machine that aims to take the human error out of visual assessments of wheat and barley.

The automated sampling system, EyeFoss has been eight years in the making and is now at a stage where it can be used as a grading tool to remove the subjectivity of quality tests.

Monsoon rains have covered India, increasing the prospects for a bumper output for summer-sown crops such as rice, oilseeds and cotton.

The rains usually cover all of India by mid-July, but this year it happened on June 16, said a senior official at the India Meteorological Department.

Event: IGC: Assessing prospects, addressing challenges

World grain and oilseed prices have retreated from their highs, but supplies remain tight following last year’s poor harvests in key exporting countries. While South American crops look set to break new records this season, drought conditions in the US remain a concern, and a recovery in demand will keep supplies under pressure.

With renewed price volatility,  biofuel mandates have come under intense scrutiny, and the potential for policy-driven restrictions to  trade, particularly should harvests disappoint again, are an enduring market concern.

The IGC Grains Conference brings together key decision makers, industry representatives and other stakeholders to discuss the latest developments in the grain and oilseed markets together with the policy challenges they present.

The grain industry's premier event - combining trade with policy will take place June, 11, 2013 in London.
