GRAPAS Awards entries open

You may think we have, over the past 150 years achieved all the progress we can towards creating an efficient milling industry the provides safe food at affordable prices and delivered to consumers on a timely basis. Not so.

There is still significant progress being made towards those objectives on an annual basis and the GRAPAS Awards are designed to recognise the advances being made by industry in an area that has largely disappeared from view. That recognition is made in the form of an award called GRAPAS, and is made at the milling industry's most dedicated event - a three sector co-located exhibition held in Asia every two years and in Europe every fourth year.

GRAPAS represents the cereals and oilseeds milling sector with a foes on rice, pasta and flour milling. There are three parts to GRAPAS: an exhibition (co-located with Victam and FIAAP exhibitions); a conference (a one-day event for millers) and an award (for the most innovative and economic improvement in milling developed over the past two years).

However, to apply for the award a company must be exhibiting at the GRAPAS Exhibition. The next opportunity to exhibit is at the co-located Victam-FIAAP-GRAPAS Exhibition which is to be held in Bangkok, Thailand's BITEC (Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre) from April 8-10, 2014.

Application opened on Friday and exhibitors can log in here to download the application form. Applicants can also apply to speak about their development on the GRAPAS Conference program by emailing: tutit@perendale.co.uk

SPACE 2013: a record-beating show

The 27th SPACE held from 10th - 13th September 2013 in Rennes, France beat all attendance records for the number of visitors, in particular foreign visitors, number of exhibitors, size of the exhibition area and number of new products presented.

There were 114,591 visitors (6% more than in 2012, beating the 2003 record) including 12,298 foreign visitors (+12%) from 110 countries. This increase in the number of visitors and the large area covered by stands (67,000 m² net exhibition area) helped to promote ideal conditions for trade and business discussions.

The significant increase in the number of foreign visitors illustrates the position of SPACE as one of the leading animal production shows in the world. This increase, marked by a large number of visitors from Asia (China, Vietnam, etc) and West Africa, met the expectations of exhibitors for whom exports are the key to increasing sales and long-term stability. The large number of countries who sent representatives, the large number of foreign journalists (73) and the number of policy makers within these visiting delegations demonstrate that SPACE is representative of the animal production sector and a world-wide crossroads.

The official visit by the Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, accompanied by Stéphane Le Foll and Guillaume Garot was the occasion for them to address the agricultural world. There were around fifty conferences and forums (a third of which dealt with subjects of international import) which were well attended. The high level of these discussions between experts and farmers helped to establish SPACE as an exceptional driver for discussion and progress in the agricultural sector.

Innovation was also a feature of the 27th SPACE with 63 Innov’SPACE awards, 5 of which received a special prize. The Research and Development Village featured pig and poultry buildings of the future. Farmers were able to find the latest solutions in ergonomics, information technologies, energy management and environmental management.

SPACE was also a unique occasion for showing breeds to buyers from all over the world. More than 400 farmers presented 12 different breeds of animal. The Open Space, organised for the first time by the Evolution group as part of the animal classes, demonstrated the progress made in genomics for genetic selection. Auction prices reached high levels (€8,400, a record for the Prim’Holstein breed) and several animals were sold to foreign buyers.

This year’s show was overshadowed by the absence of its President, Jean-Michel Lemetayer, who died suddenly this summer. The tributes paid to him enabled everyone – family, friends, the organising team, VIPs, exhibitors, farmers and visitors – to honour his memory and confirm their determination to continue to expand this Show as he would have wished: an enjoyable event for professionals from all over the world.

The organisers look forward to seeing you again in 2014, from 16th - 19th September!

FIAAP VICTAM GRAPAS Asia 2012 outcome

FIAAP, VICTAM and GRAPAS Asia 2012 provided the meeting place for South & South East Asia’s feed and grain industries as 1000s of senior industry executives from this important and influential region visited the largest feed and grain event ever held in Asia.

The event attracted more visitors than in 2010, in all 6198 - an increase of over 10%.

"The GRAPAS show, the event for grain processing, rice and flour milling, (and organised by the publishers of The Global Miller, IMD and GFMT magazine), brought in new visitors and almost 48% of all the visitors were interested in the GRAPAS exhibitors," say the show organisers.

This was also seen in the number of delegates attending the numerous technical conferences and seminars that were held during the show days, 15, 16 & 17 February.

Once again 'quality' was the word used to describe the event; The visitors described the exhibits as high quality, the exhibitors said the same for the visitors and delegates also confirmed the quality of the conferences.

Over one third of ALL visitors to the exhibitions were of director level, again demonstrating the high level of the quality and status of the visitors. Many had travelled from all over South & South East Asia. In fact there were visitors from 73 countries.

The exhibitions co-located with the VICTAM show also proved popular.

The exhibitions, which were 40% larger in area and had more exhibitors than the last shows in 2010, provided the perfect platform to launch new products and services to the market. Almost 30 new products were on show. Some of these were awarded the highly coveted “Innovations Awards”. The winners are as follows:
  • The FIAAP Animal Nutrition Award – Dr. Eckel GMBH
  • The Aquafeed Innovation Award – Wenger Manufacturing Inc.
  • The 2012 GRAPAS Award for Milling – FOSS
Further information on these and the runners up can be found here.

Visitors and exhibitors all agreed that the new home of the event, BITEC was excellent. 95% of the exhibitors stated that they will exhibit again in 2014. Of the visitors also 95% said that they would come again in 2014. The show organizers, Victam International BV, have therefore announced that their next event will be held again at BITEC.

Unfortunately the exhibition halls were not available in February and March 2014 so for just that year they will be held in April. This will enable the event to avoid Chinese New Year and local public holidays. In 2016 the event will return in February/early March.

Exhibitor quotes:
  • FOSS: “In all a good exhibition which we will be happy to attend again in 2014.” Silos Cordoba: “In general everything was good. The organisation, the companies who attend Victam, everything.”

  • Aqua Culture Asia Pacific: “The show was well attended. It was neither too massive nor small which allowed us to interact well with our clients and make new contacts. The location of our booth was good too. Thank you for a well organised event.”

  • Wenger: “Great show. We really will be able to tell in the months to come. Keep up the good work.”
Some quotes from visitors:
  • “I hope FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS will happen again, I would like it every year.”
  • “It was well organised. Thanks to you all.”
  • “I enjoyed visiting the exhibition. It was well organised and managed. I believe the next one will be even better.”
