Wayne Farms purchasing feed mill for continued growth

Wayne Farms, a poultry processing company in Danville, Arkansas are planning to purchase Pilgrim’s Pride Feed Mill in Atkins, Arkansas, which will allow them to continue to ship grains by rail. Due to a Economic Infrastructure Grant from Arkansas Economic Development Commission of US$600,000 (€457,219.8).

Purchasing the Pilgrim’s Pride Feed Mill in Atkins will allow Wayne Farms to continue to ship grain by rail. Wayne Farms cited the high cost of shipping grain by truck in the decision. The business currently receives about 2,500 rail cars of corn and soy per year. Read more ...

Poland imposes ban on Monsanto GM maize

Monsanto's MON810 GMO maize has now been officially banned in Poland, recent protests from beekeepers and anti-GMO protestors has resulted in a successful conclusion for the two groups.

Recently reported by Digital Journal about a major protest in late March by the Beekeepers and GMO activists in Warsaw demanding that the minister of agriculture Marek Sawicki ban MON810 in the country.

A report released last week shows that worldwide opposition to the biotechnology giant Monsanto and "the agro-industrial model that it represents" is growing. Read more ...

Feed Safety Guide now in 23 European Community languages

The European Feed Ingredient Safety Certification Association (EFISC) has translated the European Guide to good practice for the industrial manufacture of safe feed materials in the 23 EU languages. The Guide and the specific sector documents are available in Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish.

The translation of the Guide has been ordered by the European Commission DG Health and Consumer Protection and is the result of an efficient cooperation between the EFISC association, translators and the operators’ feed safety experts. Antibiotics that were banned in the US are still in use there

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and Arizona State University has found evidence, that some antibiotics that were previously banned by the US government for poultry production are still in use. The evidence found suggest that fluoroquinolones, that was banned  has been detected in eight out of 12 samples of feather meal in the multi-state study.

In a companion study, researchers found inorganic arsenic in feather meal used in retail fertilisers. “The discovery of certain antibiotics in feather meal strongly suggests the continued use of these drugs despite the ban put in place in 2005 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” said David Love, lead author of the report and an assistant scientist at the Centre for a Liveable Future. “The public health community has long been frustrated with the unwillingness of FDA to effectively address what antibiotics are fed to food animals.” Read more ...
