 Less than a month away, ILDEX Indonesia 2017 will officially open on October 18, 2017 at JI Expo, Jakarta, Indonesia.

 With a countdown of less than a month, the third International Livestock and Dairy Meat Processing, and Aquaculture Exposition, Vietnam promises strong attendance and many business opportunities.

 The official opening event will begin on October 18, 2017 at the main lobby of Hall D2, JI Expo, Jakarta, Indonesia from 09.00-10.30 hrs. At this edition, Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia, Dr.Ir.H. 18/09/2017: Interview: Franciscus 'Franky' Welirang - Chairman of APTINDO

 Indonesia is a country of complexity - through its geography, economy and not least it's diverse population. The root cause of this complexity is largely down to the country's make up; of five large islands including the main one of Java that is at its centre both geographically and economically and its many thousands of smaller islands. The country has a population in excess of 250 million of which some 90 million live on Java and is proving to be one of the most challenging growth areas in South East Asia. 

 Franciscus ‘Franky’ Welirang is the Chairman of APTINDO, the Association of Flour Producers in Indonesia and Director of PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk, better known for it division Bogasari Flour Mills which was formed in 1971 and of which at 64-year-old Mr Welirang is Director in Charge. Milling and Grain had the opportunity to meet him in Jakarta at IAOM’s 6th Annual Southeast Asia District Conference in early.

 Note: Indonesia supports over 55,000 small medium enterprises (SME) processing flour base product and 200 modern big manufacturers such as biscuits, noodles and bread industries and 31 milling companies of which have flourmills providing their own production. Future development is likely to happen earlier in the East of the country once the current economic condition improve.

28/10/13: VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific roll out national livestock exhibitions in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia

VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific Co., Ltd. recently revealed the success of its ILDEX exhibitions that took place in Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia this year.

17/05/2013: Syrian grain imports pick up despite war; marijuana fed pigs; new feed mill planned for Lhokseumawe

Syria has managed to increase its grain imports in recent months after a period when it was less active on international markets, traders say, a development that suggests president Bashar al-Assad has found a way to feed his people despite war.

Traders say Syria appeared to have had difficulty securing international supplies of grain last year, but the trouble has abated this year as middle men have been able to set up deals, reports Reuters.

Foodstuffs are not covered by international sanctions, but banking sanctions and war had created a climate that had made it difficult for some trading houses to do business with Damascus.

Now, with foreign brokers setting up deals, Damascus is able to buy wheat while paying a small premium of about 3 percent to 5 percent of the global price.

William von Schneidau’s BB Ranch butcher shop, located in Seattle’s pike place market, is selling meat from marijuana-fed pigs. 

Von Schneidau has teamed with nearby Bucking Boar Farms for the pigs, who are given marijuana as part of their regular diet. The stems and leaves from marijuana plants add fiber to the pigs’ diets. 

Not all mammals can process THC, but most have cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids are the other chemicals in marijuana, often linked to the medicinal properties, which help with pain and discomfort. Pigs have these receptors, and the four that ate this enhanced feed gained more weight and likely felt way more mellow than their non-marijuana feeding friends.

05/02/13: GM rice for the Philippines; USDA cuts Argentinian wheat forecast; EUFETEC publishes vision agenda

A new strain of GM rice that boosts vitamin A and reduces blindness is to be grown in the Philippines reports the Guardian. Tests have found that a substantial amount of vitamin A can be obtained by eating 60 g of Golden rice. In the wake of the Philippines' decision, Bangladesh and Indonesia have indicated that they are ready to accept Golden rice with India also considering planting it.

The USDA has cut its estimate for Argentinian wheat to 10.3 MMT, 0.7 MMT lower than the current official USDA estimate. The revised forecast for wheat exports of only 4.3 MMT this season is the lowest volume in 24 years and down by 66 percent on the USDA's 2011/12 figure of 12.9 MMT.

This document highlights the key role of animal nutrition in conjunction with genetics and animal health to tackle the three key challenges faced by the EU livestock sector within the next 20 years, i.e. i) Optimisation of nutrient resource efficiency, ii) Healthy animals for healthy humans and iii) Socially responsible livestock farming. It sets targets for improvement in these three areas and identifies the priority Research and Innovation needs to meet these targets.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, will again host the international exhibition in Indonesia's largest agribusiness livestock industry and animal feed, "Indo Livestock 2012 Expo & Forum" for  the seventh time.

Indonesia wheat imports climb as incomes rise

Indonesia's wheat and flour imports by Indonesia may rise by at least six percent this year as better incomes boost food demand in the world’s fourth most populous country.

Indonesia is Asia's biggest buyer, and it may purchase 6.6 million tonnes this year, up from 6.2 million tonnes last year, said Franciscus Welirang, chairman of the Association of Flour Producers in Indonesia.

“Every year, the milling capacity increases by 400,000 tonnes. That’s how fast demand is rising,” says Mr Welirang, also a director at PT Indofood Sukses Makmur, and owner of the world’s largest flourmill. 

Companies producing wheat-flour increased to 18 last year from just four in 1998. Read more ...

NGO's get criticised by the President of Indonesia

The Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has used a regular formal address to the Diplomatic Corps in Jakarta to remind other governments how strongly the Indonesian Government supports the palm oil industry. Leading developed country donors (the US, the UK, the EC and the Netherlands) are major funders of non-governmental organisation (NGO) anti-palm oil campaigns in Southeast Asia.

In a speech to Indonesian ambassadors and diplomats, Yudhoyono urged embassies to counter the increasing pressure from environmental NGOs on nations and companies to boycott Indonesian palm oil. This was a coded message to the embassies to reduce their support to environmental NGOs in question (principally WWF, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the US-based Rainforest Action Network). Feed use in Indonesia predicted to increase in 2012

Indonesian feed use is set to grow in 2012, economic growth reached 6.7 percent and feed use reached 11.2 million tons, almost one million more than 2010. With a production capacity that can still be improved, good economic growth, high-technology uptake and the level of local consumption of poultry products continuing to increase, feed consumption in 2012 is projected to reach 12.3 million tonnes, according to Indonesian Feed Mill Association. Dr Eric Tan, has become the new business manager for AB Vista in South East Asia. Dr Tan holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine and has extensive professional experience in the field of animal feed and nutrition. After graduating as a vet, Dr Tan worked for Cargill Feed Malaysia, where he applied his skills to feed formulation, nutritional solutions, farm technical consultancy and food safety management. Charoen Pokphand, agrees loan for US$250 million for expansion

Indonesia's largest animal feed and processed chicken manufacturer Charoen Pokphand, has secured US$250 million (€183.952 million) loan from foreign and local banks to finance its proposed expansion. The expansion includes a new plant to be built in Cirebon, West Java, as well as a possible plant in Bali. “The company is aiming to expand its feed mill production capacity from four million tons per year to five million tons per year,” the president director said. Vietnam set to over take Thailand the global leader in rice sales

With a new government in Thailand the prices of rice climbed and that was in part because Thailand was pushing the prices up. The US department of agriculture has forecast that Thailand's rice exports will drop by 20 percent to around eight million tons in 2012. This drop in exports will be because Vietnam may well over take Thailand's as the number one global exporter. Read more ...

Sorghum has potential in Southeast Asia?

The tropical conditions of Southeast Asia is well suited for Sorghum due to its low vulnerability to moulds and mycotoxins and its ability to be stored for longer. According to Adel Yusupov, US Grains Council regional director in Southeast Asia, there are two key reasons for its low use in the region. One is competitive pricing and consistent supply, the other reason is the colour, most consumers in this region prefer the deep yellow of the yolks, fats and skins of poultry and swine. Alapala completes flour mill in Indonesia

Alapala Machine Industry Trade Inc, a leading manufacturing company of flour mill turn key projects in Turkey and worldwide, attended the May 21, 2011 opening ceremony of a 150-tonne-per-day-capacity flour mill in Medan City, Indonesia. The mill, Pt Halim Sarigandum Prima, was fully supplied and installed by Alapala at the beginning of 2011.

The green-field facility has 7600 tonnes of grain storage and room for further expansion. Alapala said the facility was the first commercial size mill in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Read more in our magazine  ...
