Positive EFSA opinion for Biomin’s Digestarom® DC

Leading animal nutrition firm Biomin has reached a key step in the EU registration of its next-generation phytogenic feed additive, Digestarom® DC, as a zootechnical feed additive.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) published a favourable Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of Digestarom® DC in broilers, layers and minor avian species.
The Scientific Opinion noted that the feed additive 'has a potential to increase the growth performance of chickens for fattening when incorporated into feed at a minimum application rate of 65 mg/kg complete feed; the conclusion can be extended to chickens reared for laying and  extrapolated to minor poultry species reared up to the point of lay.'

FEFAC releases publication on feed industry’s use of co-products

FEFAC has released its publication 'Co-products, an essential part of animal nutrition', which aims to create increased awareness among EU stakeholders and policy makers about the feed industry's extensive use of co-products.
The publication describes how co-products such as brewers' grains, sugar beet pulp and wheat bran are generated during food and biofuel production, as well as what their value is in compound feed.
The use of co-products is an illustration of the role European compound feed manufacturers play in the food chain's circular economy, creating economic and environmental benefits for both the original production process and the livestock sector.
FEFAC President Nick Major said, 'A key strength of the European feed industry is its capacity and knowledge to safely convert co-products into nutritious animal feed. However, there should be increased awareness of the fact that the use of these co-products resulting from food, drink and biofuel production plays key role in (food) waste prevention and helps to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of industrial compound feed and livestock production'.
The co-products brochure will be handed out at FEFAC's 60th Anniversary Event on June 6th, 2019 in Brussels with the conference theme 'Resource Efficiency Champions of the Food Chain for 60 Years'.

Stern-Wywiol Gruppe opens new production centre in Malaysia

Stern-Wywiol Gruppe is adding to its production and sales network in south-east Asia by establishing a new production facility for its subsidiary, SternMaid Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, in the Iskandar economic zone, Malaysia.
This is the third food industry facility that the family enterprise has opened in Asia and its sixth outside Germany. Clients in the ASEAN region will in future benefit from more rapid deliveries, secure supply chains and applications advice from a consultant nearby.
The facility is dedicated to the development and production of food ingredient systems to improve the functional qualities of food. The facility has three completely separate production lines; initially work will focus on enzyme-based ingredients systems for bakers and millers plus micronutrient mixes to fortify a wide variety of foods and beverages.
Torsten Wywiol, CEO of Stern-Wywiol-Gruppe, says the opening of the facility is, 'an important cornerstone of the firm's growth strategy for Asia and beyond. Being so close to customers will allow us to satisfy their need for shorter deliver times and superb logistics even better than before.'

Deracin cleared for use with Denagard for swine

Deracin, a generic (ANADA) alternative to Aureomycin, has been approved by the FDA for use in combination with the antimicrobial Denagard for swine. This combination is approved for the treatment of swine dysentery, enteritis and pneumonia.
'The new combination of Deracin and Denagard provides an economical, easy-to-use tool to treat sick pigs,' says Colin Gray, President and CEO of Pharmgate Animal Health. 'Deracin gives producers and swine veterinarians a choice in chlortetracycline without the need to change treatment protocols or question how it will work.'
Deracin is a broad-spectrum medicated feed article (MFA) that is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms that cause diseases such as enteritis, pneumonia, ileitis, leptospirosis and jowl abscesses. Deracin is readily absorbed via oral administration, so it quickly reaches effective blood and lung concentrations. It is a veterinary feed directive (VFD) drug to be used by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

Almex company profile

Almex specialises in single screw extrusion equipment, from the extrusion unit to complete installations. They are a family owned, independent company

Almex extruders and Contivar Expanders are in use worldwide at fishfeed, oil extraction, petfood, animal feed plants, the food industry and the processing and chemical industries.

Almex started early 1970’s with repair and installation of extruders. For use in Europe these units needed much modifications, so they decided to design and built in the Netherlands a complete range of extruders for 500 to 15.000 kg/hour capacity.

These extruders did find their way to clients worldwide. Today the largest extruder has a diameter of 400 mm, a barrel length of 4800 mm and a drive of 500 kW.

The same quality extruder parts are used to manufacture Contivar™ Expanders for the feed industry, as a popular machine to improve feed quality. The robust, basically simple design of the Almex equipment guarantees years of trouble free service.

Almex was the first company using DC drives on single screw extruders in order to select the extrusion shaft speed to match the product and selected die specifications.

Using DC drives the extruder becomes a tool that can be precisely tuned in order to assure quality of the product.

ALMEX Extruders and Contivar™ Expanders are used for:

• Extrusion-cooking
• Pre-extraction processes
• Densifying
• Conditioning prior to other processes
• Expanded feed production
• Forming
• Cooking-forming
• Semi-moist
• H.T-S.T. processes
• Co-extrusions
