Anpario increases its profits

Formerly Kiotech International, Anpario Plc has increasedits profits for 2011. This is the international supplier of natural high-performance feed additives that enhance growth, health and sustainability in agriculture and aquaculture.

Underlying profit, before tax, increased to UK£2.1 million from UK£1.9 million in 2010 from revenues of UK£19.2 million (2010: UK£21.6 million).

“This has been another successful and encouraging year for the group. The performance is driven by two key factors: firstly the success of our strategy to reposition the UK business to focus on higher margin products; and secondly achieving the synergy benefits from the Optivite acquisition,” says Anpario's chief executive David Bullen.

Its broad geographic spread enabled the company to offset local issues in Middle Eastern and Southern European markets with strong performances in other territories.

Operations – UK Agriculture
Strategic alliances have been formed with some significant UK agribusinesses providing the group with the opportunity to accelerate market penetration of its specialty feed additive range.

Vitrition, the company's organic feed brand, delivered growth in profits.

"This performance is particularly commendable as the challenges of the economic climate increased during the year as consumers switched to purchasing lower priced meat and traditional meat protein products," says Mr Bullen.

Operations – International Agriculture
The division continues to trade through its two complementary brands, Kiotechagil and Optivite, covering in excess of 60 countries. This linked approach helps smooth out some of the trading peaks and troughs which are inevitable in a global business. 2011 was particularly volatile and our reaction to these challenges has been to take a cautious view when offering credit and we have worked closely with our distributors, to ensure neither party is exposed to vulnerable companies along the supply chain.

Whilst we are cautious in relation to Europe and the Middle East owing to the continuing turmoil, the division is confident and focused on capturing opportunities in the higher growth regions, especially China and Brazil where the agricultural markets are vast.  We are also endeavouring to launch a number of new products to our distributors, which we believe have strong differentiation compared to the competition. By pooling the resources of Optivite and Kiotechagil we have strengthened and centralised the technical team which has accelerated our R&D efforts.

Significant progress was achieved in China with our wholly owned subsidiary beginning to generate profit within eighteen months of being established, enabling future growth initiatives to be self-financing.  The subsidiary continued to successfully gain national registration approvals for key products such as Neutox, a high performance, broad spectrum toxin binder for animal feed and Prefect, a gut conditioner and microbial optimiser for young pigs, particularly in high stress environments.  These have received a positive reception in the market and will be key drivers of future growth for the subsidiary.

Acquisition
On 29 March 2012 the Company acquired 100% of the share capital of Meriden Animal Health Limited for a total consideration of up to UK£4.1 million before costs. Meriden's sales for the 12 months to December 2011 were UK£5.3 million and adjusted profit before interest and tax was UK£0.7 million.

Meriden’s Orego-Stim range of products, using essential oils, is the leading brand in its field and is marketed across 60 countries worldwide, with the majority of sales being outside the United Kingdom.

Meriden has a close and important partnership in China with sales accounting for 26% of Meriden’s total sales during 2011. Anpario intends to give further support to this relationship to capitalise on the vast potential of China’s agriculture market.

New routes to market in the UK

UK£12 million is being invested to open new routes to market with the construction of Northamptonshire’s latest grain store and processing facility in The UK. It will create a direct link between farmers and end-users in the Midlands,  moving farmers from the position of supplier to that of valued partner in the food supply chain.

The 'Northants' Advanced Processing Centre (APC), in Kettering, will put the region’s growers at the heart of a new approach to supply chain management. Within a 25-mile radius of the APC are nine of the country’s leading producers of combinable crop-based products from bread and biscuits to breakfast cereals. Together they use more than 1.25 million tonnes of grain annually and each demands a high quality product, supplied to a known specification each and every delivery. Read more ...

FIAAP VICTAM GRAPAS Asia 2012 outcome

FIAAP, VICTAM and GRAPAS Asia 2012 provided the meeting place for South & South East Asia’s feed and grain industries as 1000s of senior industry executives from this important and influential region visited the largest feed and grain event ever held in Asia.

The event attracted more visitors than in 2010, in all 6198 - an increase of over 10%.

"The GRAPAS show, the event for grain processing, rice and flour milling, (and organised by the publishers of The Global Miller, IMD and GFMT magazine), brought in new visitors and almost 48% of all the visitors were interested in the GRAPAS exhibitors," say the show organisers.

This was also seen in the number of delegates attending the numerous technical conferences and seminars that were held during the show days, 15, 16 & 17 February.

Once again 'quality' was the word used to describe the event; The visitors described the exhibits as high quality, the exhibitors said the same for the visitors and delegates also confirmed the quality of the conferences.

Over one third of ALL visitors to the exhibitions were of director level, again demonstrating the high level of the quality and status of the visitors. Many had travelled from all over South & South East Asia. In fact there were visitors from 73 countries.

The exhibitions co-located with the VICTAM show also proved popular.

The exhibitions, which were 40% larger in area and had more exhibitors than the last shows in 2010, provided the perfect platform to launch new products and services to the market. Almost 30 new products were on show. Some of these were awarded the highly coveted “Innovations Awards”. The winners are as follows:
  • The FIAAP Animal Nutrition Award – Dr. Eckel GMBH
  • The Aquafeed Innovation Award – Wenger Manufacturing Inc.
  • The 2012 GRAPAS Award for Milling – FOSS
Further information on these and the runners up can be found here.

Visitors and exhibitors all agreed that the new home of the event, BITEC was excellent. 95% of the exhibitors stated that they will exhibit again in 2014. Of the visitors also 95% said that they would come again in 2014. The show organizers, Victam International BV, have therefore announced that their next event will be held again at BITEC.

Unfortunately the exhibition halls were not available in February and March 2014 so for just that year they will be held in April. This will enable the event to avoid Chinese New Year and local public holidays. In 2016 the event will return in February/early March.

Exhibitor quotes:
  • FOSS: “In all a good exhibition which we will be happy to attend again in 2014.” Silos Cordoba: “In general everything was good. The organisation, the companies who attend Victam, everything.”

  • Aqua Culture Asia Pacific: “The show was well attended. It was neither too massive nor small which allowed us to interact well with our clients and make new contacts. The location of our booth was good too. Thank you for a well organised event.”

  • Wenger: “Great show. We really will be able to tell in the months to come. Keep up the good work.”
Some quotes from visitors:
  • “I hope FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS will happen again, I would like it every year.”
  • “It was well organised. Thanks to you all.”
  • “I enjoyed visiting the exhibition. It was well organised and managed. I believe the next one will be even better.”

Indonesia wheat imports climb as incomes rise

Indonesia's wheat and flour imports by Indonesia may rise by at least six percent this year as better incomes boost food demand in the world’s fourth most populous country.

Indonesia is Asia's biggest buyer, and it may purchase 6.6 million tonnes this year, up from 6.2 million tonnes last year, said Franciscus Welirang, chairman of the Association of Flour Producers in Indonesia.

“Every year, the milling capacity increases by 400,000 tonnes. That’s how fast demand is rising,” says Mr Welirang, also a director at PT Indofood Sukses Makmur, and owner of the world’s largest flourmill.

Companies producing wheat-flour increased to 18 last year from just four in 1998. Read more ...

Algeria's 2012 grain production forecast up

Algeria's 2012 grain production is still likely to be a good crop for this year, forecasting 5.5 million tonnes up 31 percent from last year’s ouput, says the Agriculture Ministry.

Algeria’s grain planting season completed under favourable climatic conditions throughout the country. Government estimates indicate that 3.3 million ha of grain were planted. Durum continues to account for the biggest portion of the planted area followed by barley and bread wheat. Indications are that farmers are becoming more favorable to certified seeds and fertilisers. Algeria remained one of the world’s largest importers of wheat in 2011. Cereal products accounted for about 37 percent of total food imports bill in 2011.

Wheat imports were up by close to 42 percent to just over seven million tonnes. Durum imports were up by 48 percent and bread wheat by 39 percent.

In May 2011, the Ministry of Agriculture suspended the tax on private durum imports for an indefinite period because of the high world market prices.

Aflatoxin contamination of commodities in detail

Agricultural commodities are prone to infection from a range of different fungal species. This is of increasing concern as mycotoxins may be produced as a by-product of infections.

Biomin, of Austria, says these toxic metabolites can cause acute and chronic intoxication when ingested by higher animals, resulting in a negative economic impact for the livestock industry. Biomin says of special interest are the Fusarium mycotoxins, which infect plants in the field but can continue to grow and contaminate products during storage. temperature and water activity (available water content to mould in a substrate), are the most important factors to influence fungal colonization and mycotoxin production.

The trichothecenes (type A: T-2 toxin and type B: deoxynivalenol) are the largest group of mycotoxins which contaminate commodities such as corn, wheat, barley and oats. Trichothecenes, the most abundant source of contamination in cereal grains today, is due to Fusarium head blight which is primarily caused by type-B trichothecene producers (Foroud and Eudes 2009).

A survey in Africa and the Middle East about the occurrence of mycotoxins in commodities such as feeds and feed ingredients has been carried out. See the results ...

Vietnamese pork contains banned lean-meat additives

A random nation wide sample of pork in Vietnam has detected that over four percent of the nations pork is contaminated with banned lean meat additives which could lead to cardiovascular complications in humans, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's Animal Husbandry Department revealed. Nine laboratories conducted an analysis after inspectors found the harmful substances being used in southern Dong Nai Province. Eight among 179 pork samples were found to be positive for the chemical.

Animal feed was also found to be contaminated after test were carried out on animal feed and urine. Of the 268 samples of animal feed collected, 13 were positive for the additives while seven of the 108 urine samples were contaminated. "The use of banned beta agonist substances in livestock farming has decreased and is very close to the regulated level. However, there is still potential for the risks to rise again, especially since their use has resulted in profit for a number of businesses," said vice head of the department Nguyen Xuan Duong. In Kyrgyzstan, 40,000 head of livestock died of starvation due to the lack of feed available. Another 14,000 animals were slaughtered by their farmers to avoid the animals starving to death. Experts estimate that over the past two weeks the problem has worsened mostly due to the reckless use of feed reserves from the Chui valley, in the central part of country which caused the shortage of feed spreading far beyond the country's southern areas. To the additional purchase of barley in Chui Oblast the Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Finance has allocated 12 million soms (US$ 240,000). Read more ...
