September 18, 2023 - Corn broke the monthly record for the historical series in terms of value and quantity. For the months of August, soya beans and soya meal broke records for value and quantity.
Brazilian exports of agribusiness products rose 6.6 percent in August this year, reaching US$ 15.63 billion. The value corresponded to 50.4 percent of Brazil's total exports.
According to an analysis by the Secretariat for Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SCRI/Mapa), two factors explain the August result: an increase in the quantity exported and a reduction in prices.
The first factor is related to the record grain harvest in 2022/2023, which increased the exportable surplus capacity. The other factor is the fall in international food prices.
For SCRI analysts, the products that stand out this month are corn, soya beans, soya meal, sugar and fresh chicken meat.
In terms of value and quantity, corn broke the monthly record of the historical series. For the months of August, soya beans and soya meal broke records for value and quantity.
Also for the months of August, sugar and fresh chicken meat hit record volumes.
Foreign sales of soya beans reached a record of US$4.19 billion for the months of August, up 12.3 percent. The volume exported was also a record, at 8.39 million tonnes (+41.1 percent). China, as the main destination for this product, increased its share from US$2.72 billion to US$3.15 billion.
Soya meal recorded sales of US$1.19 billion, a figure obtained due to the record volume exported for the month of 2.41 million tonnes. The European Union continues to be the main importer of Brazilian soybean meal, with purchases of US$504.29 million, equivalent to 1 million tonnes.
Foreign sales of corn reached 9.33 million tonnes, a record amount for the historical series that began in 1997. The value totalled US$2.21 billion in the month surveyed. China imported almost a quarter of the cereal's exports.
Brazil exported 425 million tonnes of fresh chicken meat, an increase of 3.3 percent equivalent to US$780 million.
Sugar recorded foreign sales of US$1.78 billion, up 48.7 percent, and the quantity exported was 3.63 million tones (+23 percent) a record for August.
China is also the biggest buyer of fresh chicken meat and Brazilian sugar.
Year to date (January to August)
Between January and August this year, exports totalled US$112.68 billion, up 4.2 percent. The increase is due to the expansion in the quantity exported, despite a 5.2 percent drop in the price index. Sales of soya beans, sugar and corn were the products that contributed most to the favourable performance in the year to date.
