11/03/2013: Ukraine to export millions of tons of grain to China in 2013; EU: Feed contaminated with Aflatoxin

Under the terms of a loan agreement between the Export-Import Bank of China and the State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine, Ukraine plans to export 4 million tons of grain to China in 2013.

The contract between Ukraine and China, which was signed in July 2012, stipulated the supply of Ukrainian grain during the period of 15 years.

The volume of annual grain exported to China will be determined by the supply plan, bringing the absolute delivery volume up to 6 million tons per calendar year.

Out of 4 million tons which are to be exported to China in 2013, 2 million tons will be purchased directly on Ukrainian market while the remaining 2 million tons will be procured through forward contracts.

Authorities in the Netherlands and Germany are scrambling to detect and remove from circulation tonnes of feed potentially contaminated with aflatoxin, according to a recent press report . The source is presumed to be a consignment of 45,000 million tonnes of corn imported from Serbia and distributed by Toepfer.

Approximately 10,000 tonnes of the suspect batch was distributed to 13 feed mills in Northern Germany resulting in delivery of feed to 4,000 farms in Lower Saxony and numerous small operations in seven other states. Product was also shipped to the Netherlands where trace-forward is in progress.

Happy birthday to FEFANA. The the EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtureshas turned 50.
The first statutes of FEFANA were signed on January 22, 1963 by the National Associations in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
The founding members had the forward vision of forming a European Association to act as an interface between the feed additives manufacturing industry as a whole and the European Union, then European Economic Community (EEC), and its Member States authorities.

Through integration of the National Platforms and direct corporate affiliation at European level, FEFANA now counts more than 100 members companies from 28 countries including the EU, Switzerland and Norway.

The European Commission has dismissed any suggestions of a freeze on EU decision making on the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops, reports Europolitics. The Commission is currently in the process of assessing the GM crop files for authorisation of cultivation, Frédéric Vincent, the spokesman for health and consumer policy at the European Commission, told Europolitics, on  January 23, 2013. He confirmed that “the Commission has not yet decided whether or not to launch the procedure for authorisation” of cultivation of any of the seven GM crops currently awaiting approval (six maize varieties and one soybean) and that such a decision might not be taken “in the near future”.

EU compound feed production in 2012: stable vs. 2011

The compound feed production in the EU-271 in 2012 reached an estimated level of 151.9 mio. t, i.e. the same volume as in 2011 and 2010, according to the preliminary statistical data provided by FEFAC members.

While pig feed production dropped by 2 percent, cattle and poultry feed have seen their production grow respectively by +1.5 and +1%. As a consequence, poultry feed consolidated its position of leading segment of EU compound feed production slightly above pig feed.

The most important factors which have weighed on the EU feed demand in 2012 were the still fragile economic situation of the pig sector and soaring feed material costs.

Among the largest producing countries, Germany and UK performed rather well, with annual growth slightly above 2 percent, while France and Poland remained stable and Spain, Italy and The Netherlands saw their production fall at rates between -1 and -2%. Production of poultry feed in Southern Europe was affected in particular by the implementation of the new welfare standards for laying hens.

The high cereal prices over the last two years contributed to improving the competitive market position of industrial compound feed production vs. home mixing. However, this gain was offset to a certain extent by the development of alternative pig feeding strategies based on roughly grinded feed and liquid feeding.

As a result, Germany’s position as leading EU country in terms of total compound feed production before France was strengthened, with Spain scoring third place.

The final estimate and detailed breakdown of the 2012 results will be presented on the occasion of the XXVI FEFAC Congress on June 5-8, 2013 in Kracow.

Market Outlook for 2013
FEFAC market experts foresee a stabilisation in poultry feed production, a further reduction in pig feed production (-1%) and a slight increase in cattle feed demand (+1%).
Further market uncertainties are linked to the impact of the implementation of the new group-housing requirements for sows. Overall, compound feed production is expected to remain unchanged vs. 2012.

The demand for agricultural commodities is expected to remain high in 2013, with the main consequences of maintaining quotations at a high level. The quotations for agricultural raw materials increased significantly during the second half of 2012. With prices expected to stay high, the average cost for supply of feed materials could be higher in 2013, as compared to 2012. After two major crop failures for soybean in South and North America, a record harvest for soybean is expected in Brazil in 2013, but its positive impact may be undermined by the storage and logistics issues it could trigger. On the cereals side, the uncertainty is still important regarding the quantity and quality of the next harvest, due to bad weather conditions in major exporting countries.

10/01/13:World food wastage; Indian wheat gets a boost; UK grain imports

  • The Institute of Mechanical Engineers has released a report which claims that up to 50 percent of food is wasted. World production of food stands at around four billion metric tonnes of food per annum, so the wastage amounts to two billion tonnes. The report pinpoints poor practices in harvesting, storage and transportation, as well as market and consumer wastage, as the causes behind the losses. Download the full report.
  • The Indian wheat industry has received a boost in the form of cold weather. The world’s second-biggest producer, may reach a record for a seventh year as cold weather boosts yield prospects and record domestic prices spur planting, potentially aiding exports. Read more...
  • UK imports of grain have risen as millers accept better quality grain. According to Emma Croft of Anderson Grain Marketing, milling wheats have accounted for a significant proportion of the imports, with more than a quarter (224,000/T) originating from Germany (a key source of high protein milling wheat) – that’s five times the amount the UK had imported at this point in the season last year. Friedrich electronic: It’s all in the mix

The choice of suitable dosing machines for blending applications can be determining for the product quality as well as the smooth operation of the process. Friedrich electronic are facing this challenge with their Flow Controller FC3.

In many companies of the worldwide bulk processing industries the possibilities of flow regulation at the silo discharge often remain underestimated. There are still manual sliders in operation, set to optimum dosing performance via markings. This may be quite useful with some of these applications. In other places, older types of volumetric dosing units are still in operation. However, before exchanging manual or older units or designing new plants, one should be aware of the huge possibilities modern systems can offer.

The operation of volumetric dosing units may in some cases cause malfunctions or inaccuracies. It demands interventions of skilled personnel in case the bulk density changes. The same problem occurs, if the blending ratio is to be changed; the operator has to estimate the performance and to adjust the machines accordingly afterwards.
By installing a Friedrich electronic FC3 Flow Controller, the blending efficiency of most plants can be improved.

Blocking or running dry of the silos remain partly realised with an immense time delay, or they demand extremely sensitive notification systems in order to avoid that. An effective process monitoring including visualised material flows, which is today’s state-of-the-art, is unfortunately impossible in those cases.

For all that, especially in the bulk processing industries the accurate mixture of components e. g. cereals or legumes is most important, as it is determining for the quality and at least for the success of the product.

Although some of these shortcomings do not occur using volumetric dosing units, which offer more exact dosing compared to manual sliders, it remains volumetric. Therefore, effective process control including blocking and running dry prevention is not reached. Parameter adjustments have to be made manually, while remote control and proper process monitoring are still impossible.

A further alternative is the usage of dosing screws. In that case, process manipulation by means of remote controlling is possible, and the performance can be adjusted via rotation speed. Nevertheless, even this method is volumetric and holds the danger of inaccuracies, rarely bearing a relation to the high investments as well as installation and maintenance efforts. The general problem with blocking and running dry can also not be solved using a dosing screw without any additional sensor technology.

Having to cope with these kinds of problems with the production of blendings was decisive for the development of Flow Controller FC3 at Friedrich electronic.

The result is a dosing system developed on the basis of many years of experience, allowing for intelligent, accurate blending of various products. Moreover, it offers the possibility of exact performance adjustment and quantity balancing.

The system is designed with a pneumatic flat slide at the inlet and a specially embedded baffle sensor, regulating the flow capacity in t/h according to the desired value and weighing the product in kg. Meanwhile, the process is monitored and constantly checked for malfunctions. If blockings or bridgings occur above the unit, the flat slide automatically opens up more widely until the problem is solved or - if the problem remains - individually triggers an alarm. Therefore, once the process control is programmed the monitoring and malfunction detection is greatly facilitated. The electric slide control also provides automatic and zero-taring as well as checking of plausibility regarding slide position and weighing signal.
Thanks to its low housing, the FC3 Flow Controller can be retrofitted in many production processes.

If necessary, the operation personnel may intervene quickly and effectively in the process via interface to make adjustments or to analyse the collected data. With these features a very high level of integration is reached, providing both maximum process safety and product quality - and offering valuable data on the process itself.

Thanks to its very low housing, most of the production processes can even be retrofitted with Flow Controller FC3 in order to increase the plant efficiency. The only precondition for a successful installation is a product reservoir of a free-flowing product above the machine. That is why in most cases the controller is installed directly underneath the silo discharges.

EuroTier Blog: Animal welfare does not have to add costs to food production

Animal welfare and economic food production can be reconciled in successful livestock production, says the president of the DLG Carl-Albrecht Bartmer. The DLG stages the world's largest exhibition for intensive livestock producers, EuroTier, in Hanover, Germany in November every second year.

He  told international journalists gathering at a welcome reception on the evening before the opening of the fair, that EuroTier 2012 has a special feature on animal welfare which reflects the serious discussion that is continuing in developed countries around this issue.

"In Hall 26 you can learn about the newest development in animal welfare where modern technology and innovative engineers are creating technical progress and answers that realise animal welfare on the one side and a growing world with a growing demand for food, such as meat milk and egg products, on the other."

As far as this year's event is concerned he told journalists that his message might sound a 'little boring'. Again it's the biggest EuroTier ever, "and that is something I say every year," says Mr Bartmer.

But the difference this year is in the show's incredible growth.

"This year we are here with 2445 exhibitors - that's a growth of 25 percent over last time. The most interesting thing is the growth in international exhibitors. We have seen a 40 percent increase in international exhibitors and they now represent half of all exhibitors.

"We have 50 nations here in Hanover and that's even a record, making it fantastic starting conditions for 2012."

But why is it this way? Mr Bartmer mused with his audience.

"Why do international exhibitors come to Germany, this little country in the middle of Europe?

"I think people understand that the technical progress that we represent here in Hanover is a progress you can use everywhere in the world. It means that technical progress is not specific to special regions, this progress can be used everywhere. That's what makes it very interesting to come together. You find the best market leaders and the best innovation leaders here in Hanover," he added.
