The Minnesota Grain and Feed Association received a grant from the AgStar Fund for Rural America Grant Program, to produce a video to train volunteer firefighters and first responders on how to respond to a grain bin rescue situation and proper response to a grain elevator or feed mill fire. The film project was recently completed and the video is available for viewing on the MGFA website. DVDs are also available for purchase.
With constant turnover at volunteer fire departments and in the first responder community, there is an on-going need to provide specific training in the unique area of fighting a grain elevator or feed mill fire and in responding properly to a grain bin rescue (possible suffocation) situation, both at a commercial grain elevator and on-farm. A better trained and educated first responder community was the ultimate goal of this film project.
To preview the two part (classroom and on-site simulator training) grain bin rescue video and/or the video on responding to a grain elevator or feed mill fire, go to our website at www.mgfa.org > News & Information > Safety & Health > Safety Videos. Firefighters and first responders can either link to the video on the site for training or they can purchase the three DVD set (order form also posted at www.mgfa.org). Grain elevator and feed mill firms, as well as farm groups, may want to consider purchasing the DVD set for their own local fire department and first responders.
The Minnesota Grain and Feed Association is a 105 year old non-profit association that represents the interests of the Minnesota country grain elevator and feed mill industry.

Argentine biotech firm along with US company aims to break Monsanto market dominance
US-based Arcadia Biosciences and Argentine biotech firm Bioceres have teamed up together in an attempt to break Monsanto market dominance. This new joint venture aim to introduce a host of new transgenic soybean seeds into Argentina which is potentially a lucrative market for genetically modified seed makers. The South American farming powerhouse is the world's third-largest soybean exporter and ranks No 2 in corn exports.
The two companies have already invested about US$120 million (€91.278 million) to develop seeds that will combine transgenic traits for resistance to the herbicide glyphosate with drought tolerance and increased nitrogen and water use efficiency. Another US$20 million (€15.213 million) to US$40 million (€30.426 million) will be spent over the next four or five years to gain regulatory approval for the seeds in key markets, including other South American nations, the US, China and India.
