14/06/2017: Heat stress could be underestimated in swine: European state of play and new study on live yeast benefits

Survey of heat stress risks in farrowing rooms in Europe. Average daily percentage of time spent above 25°C (significant heat stress) and estimation of the associated feed intake reduction (Lallemand Animal Nutrition internal data, 2016).

In the summer, lactating sows could spend 34 to 94 percent of their time above heat stress threshold (25°C), which could lead to 0.6 to 2.5 kg per day of reduced feed intake, and this is true from Netherlands to Spain.

These are the findings from an initial survey conducted by Lallemand Animal Nutrition in order to evaluate the reality of heat stress in the farrowing rooms across Europe. The consequences for the sow and the farmer range from discomfort to reduced body weight and reproduction issues.

Recent trial (INRA Pegase, France, unpublished) confirms that the use of probiotic yeast S. cerevisiae boulardii I-1079 in feed, known to help control digestive process and performance under challenging conditions, could contribute to adaptation to heat stress. The study was performed by E. Labussière and his team at IINRA Pegase, using state-of-the-art experimental facility to study energy balance and metabolism under controlled conditions.

They used finishing pigs as a model for swine and sows, (the bigger the animal, the more sensitive to heat stress). Results indicate that LEVUCELL SB had a positive effect on growth performance under both thermo-neutral and heat stress conditions. However, the supplementation had a greater impact under heat stress as it was able to “compensate” for the negative impact of high temperature on pig growth.

This could be linked to two effects of the supplement:

  • Improved feeding behavior: The number of meals per day was significantly improved under heat stress and the total daily feed intake was not affected by ambient temperature with LEVUCELL SB.
  • Positive effect on energy metabolism: Less energy is consumed for heat production, therefore more energy was made available for pig growth.

Farm trials conducted with sows in maternity pen confirm similar benefits in sows in field conditions: improved sow feed intake, reduced body weight loss in lactation, translated into increased piglet pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG), and even reduction of piglet neonatal diarrhea.

Hence, LEVUCELL SB could represent a valuable tool to help alleviate the heavy toll of heat stress on pig production, in complement to relevant heat abatement strategies in the barn.

Biotechnology developer receives patent for xylose

A California based biotechnology developer Verdezyne has been granted a US patent titled “Engineered microorganisms with enhanced fermentation activity” for an engineered yeast and class of enzymes it developed which can be used to ferment the abundant, but hard-to-process, xylose found in cellulosic feedstocks.

According to Steven Picataggio, chief scientific officer at Verdezyne, xylose is the most abundant pentose sugar and can comprise up to 40 percent of cellulosic feedstocks being considered for biofuels and biochemical production. “Unfortunately, yeast is naturally unable to ferment this xylose, and robust xylose fermentation remains a key bottleneck for commercialising the next-generation cellulosic ethanol process,” he said. Research with yeast protein carried out on heat stressed broilers

Scientists at West Bengal University working alongside AB Vista carried out research on yeast and yeast protein concentrate on broiler chickens exposed to heat stress and challenged with salmonella enteritidis. The experiment was carried out over a 35 day period to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation.

Yeast supplementation was also as effective as the YPC additives in reducing serum cortisol level. Villus height increased by supplementation of YPC-pellets as compared with the other dietary groups although the implication of this increment was not discernible in terms of production performances. Dietary yeast extracts tested as alternative to antibiotics in poultry

A dietary yeast extract could be an effective alternative to antibiotics for poultry producers, according to a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) study. Microbiologist Gerry Huff with USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Fayetteville, Ark, and her colleagues have been studying the effects of yeast extract as an immune stimulant and alternative to antibiotics in conventional turkeys.

Non-pharmaceutical remedies and preventatives are particularly needed for organic poultry production, according to Huff, who works in the ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit (PPPSRU) in Fayetteville. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA goals of ensuring food safety and promoting international food security. Read more ...

GEA Niro initiative converts CO2 into fuel and animal feed

GEA Niro is leading a new initiative that will, when successful, significantly assist industries with a large CO2 footprint to become more environmental friendly and reduce operational costs spent on taxation of effluents. The new process converts CO2 into fuel alcohol, proteins for animal feed and fertilizer for agricultural purposes. The basic idea is to feed the CO2 to algae and transforming the algae to alcohol by fermentation and the residual bio matter to fertiliser. The exhausted yeast cells are then spray dried into protein powder for animal feed.

The principle is simple, however the process implementation is difficult due to the very large installations and large mass flows involved. GEA does, however, have the necessary core competence and correct organisation to handle projects of this magnitude. CO2 is scrubbed from processes with high CO2 concentrations such as rotary ovens of cement plants. The CO2 is then introduced to basins that contain large volumes of algae which consume the CO2 gas. Algae are polysaccharides containing fermentable sugars, these are easily converted to alcohol through fermentation.

The alcohol can then be recovered for use as fuel, leaving the remaining algae bio mass and yeast cream for drying into useful fertiliser and animal feed respectively. The savings when converting CO2 this way can be significant especially as the worldwide tightening of penalties for discharging greenhouse gasses to the environment becomes increasingly severe.
