05/07/2013: Group attacks grain body; UPA food bill; Monsanto feed trials

A new farm group is questioning the value for money grain growers receive from levies paid to fund the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

Paul McKenzie, farm management consultant, has launched iCropAustralia with the aim of sparking debate on the value for money that growers receive from levies.  

GRDC says it was not aware of iCropAustralia until recent media coverage.

The UPA government will give the nation's two-third population the right to 5 kg of food grain every month at highly subsidised rates.
 

The cabinet, which up to now has always has deferred a decision, approved the order to implement the food security bill. The ordinance has to be passed in both the houses of parliament within six months.

The recent genetically engineered wheat that was found growing unauthorised in an Oregon field was also used in three livestock feeding trials to evaluate its nutritional qualities.

The Monsanto Co., has said the biotech crop was used in two feeding trials in the U.S. and one overseas.

The wheat used in the overseas trial was ground before shipping, in accordance with USDA rules for restricted transgenic material for the production and transport of the seed.
