Derecho devastates crops in Iowa

Almost 40 percent of the corn crop across the state of Iowa was destroyed in mid-August by a land hurricane, known as a derecho, which caused a wind gust of 112mph (180 kph). The derecho, which originated just north of Des Moines, reached the strength of a category three hurricane. Several fatalities were caused by falling trees and two million customers lost power. The path of derecho across the Midwest was nearly 770 miles (1200 km) long and lasted around 14 hours across several states. Winds as high as 100mph also hit eastern Nebraska, Wisconsin and parts of Illinois.

Meterologists explained that the extensive damage to power lines, crops and grain storage bins and silos was because the winds were prolonged. Reuters reported that the derecho destroyed or seriously damaged more than 57 million bushels of commercial grain storage capacity in Iowa and a similar amount on farms, according to the state's agriculture department. Reuters also estimated the storm reduced the national yield by 2.5 to 4.5 bushels-per-acre.
