Zinpro Corporation sponsors 2020 Young Scholar Recognition Awards

The three award recipients contributed research beneficial to animal wellness and performance

Zinpro Corporation, an industry leader in performance trace mineral nutrition for livestock, poultry, aquaculture and companion animals, have announced that three graduate students, Chad Page, Rebecca Swanson and Robert Ziegler, have been recognised as outstanding Young Scholars at the 2020 Western Section Awards Program as part of the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science (WSASAS) annual meeting.

Sponsored by Zinpro Corporation, the WSASAS Young Scholar Recognition Program acknowledges the outstanding research accomplishments by doctoral and master's degree students. Each award winner received a plaque, a monetary reward and an invitation to present their research findings at the meeting, which was held virtually in July. The recognition program is also designed to increase participation in the WSASAS annual meetings by showcasing exceptional and contemporary research from talented, young scientists.

'The three award winners for 2020 are wonderful examples of young researchers whose scientific contributions will significantly help to improve animal wellness, performance and animal production profitability,' said Connie Larson, Ph.D., associate director – global technical services for Zinpro. 'We are very pleased to recognise these outstanding individuals for their research contributions and dedication to benefit the future of our industry.'

Doctoral Award Recipient
Chad Page earned his bachelor's degree in animal health and veterinarian science from Brigham Young University-Idaho and his master's degree in animal and range sciences from Montana State University. He completed his doctoral degree in animal science under the direction of Dr Whit Stewart at the University of Wyoming. Page was recognised for his dissertation research, which focused on increasing dietary zinc levels during late gestation and early lactation in ewes, and the effects on ewe mammary health, serum metabolites, and progeny performance. Originally from Chandler, Arizona, Page recently began his doctoral career at Utah State University as an assistant professor of production animal agriculture with an emphasis in small ruminants.

Master's Award Recipient
Rebecca Swanson earned her bachelor's degree in both animal science and agricultural business from California State University, Chico. She completed her master's degree in animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and was recognised for her research contributions on heat stress and its effects on the wellbeing, metabolic efficiency, and performance of feedlot animals. She also has been involved with studies examining fetal programming stress effects in sheep and high maternal androgen effects on postnatal growth and metabolism in cattle. Since graduating in May, Swanson has started her doctoral degree at Mississippi State University.

Master's Award Recipient
Robert Ziegler earned a bachelor's degree in animal and veterinary sciences from the University of Wyoming. He completed his master's degree in animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under the guidance of Dr Travis Mulliniks and was recognised for his research on the impact of cow size on cow/calf performance, post-weaning offspring performance and overall production efficiency. After graduation, he accepted a technical assistance position that aligns directly with his goals of conducting applied research geared toward producers so they can base their management decisions off powerful data sets.
