The new bulk terminal will be located in the Port of Tincan, Lagos, Nigeria and will handle over 850,000 tons of wheat and corn per year.
Josepdam Port Services Nigeria Ltd and Silos Córdoba S.L.U have just signed a contract for the construction of a new grain storage facility with a total capacity of 145,000 tonnes to store mainly wheat and corn. Once the facility is completed the firm will be able to handle over 850,000 tons a year.
The storage plant has been conceived to receive 1,200 tons/hour – two ship unloaders 600 tons/hour each working on parallel – and to deliver up to 600 tons/hour to the customers on the port and to the local market.
The complete facility will have combination of flat bottom silos of 10.272,00 and 6.152,00 tons capacity, and will have a total storage capacity of 145,784 tons.
It will also have a truck delivery system with six truck loading silos able to deliver around 20 trucks of 30 tons each per hour.
The facility will be fully automatised, including ventilation system, temperature control system and the latest technology for grain storage management. The construction of the steel silos terminal will cost approximately $80 million and is expected to be completed in two years.
Nigeria imports large quantities of grain to feed its big population. Wheat is important to the diet of many Nigerians, but the country is dependent on imports to produce the wheat flour, pasta and other products consumers require.
The International Grains Council (IGC) puts Nigeria's total grains production in 2018-19 at 19.1 million tonnes, up from 18.9 million the year before. The figure includes an unchanged 11 million tonnes of corn and 6.5 million of sorghum, up from the previous year's 6.3-million-tonne crop.
Total imports of grains in Nigeria (which comprises wheat and coarse grains) are forecast at 5.6 million tonnes in 2018-19, up from 5.5 million the year before. Most of the country's imports are wheat, with imports forecast unchanged at 5.2 million tonnes. Nigeria is also forecast to import 110,000 tonnes of durum wheat, up from 100,000 in 2017-18. The IGC puts Nigeria's rice crop in 2018 unchanged at 3.8 million tonnes, with rice imports also at 3 million tonnes, up from 2.4 million the previous year.
Nigeria has the largest population (203.4 million) of any African nation. Projections are that it will grow to 392 million by 2050, making it the world's fourth most populous country.
It is a massive market for wheat flour served by some of the world's biggest flour milling companies.
