06/11/12: Nigeria hit by rice blast; aflatoxin in the US; Cargill's CFO resigns

  • Rice crops in parts of Nigeria have been hit by an outbreak of rice blast. Officials of the Kaduna Agricultural Development Project (KADP) fear that the infection, caused by the bacteria, Magnaporthe grisea, could affect the annual projected rice yield in the state. Read more...

Now the knock on effects are evident in the crops: Illinois, one of the worst hit drought areas, has reported high levels of aflatoxin.   • Cargill's chief financial officer, Sergio Rial will resign his post with the company effective at the end of November in order to return to his native Brazil for personal reasons.
