DLG President Carl-Albrecht Bartmer gave a "hearty welcome" to all visiting journalists and asked that as they were all leading reporters in the field of animal production and husbandry from around the world, would they "lend me your eyes, ears and understanding" over the next few days to look into the serious subjects of sustainability, efficient use of resources, perfecting farm management where animals were concerned.

"Animal welfare is playing a bigger role in society today," he added.

While people still enjoyed eating animal products they expect good welfare conditions for them, he said, adding that welfare, environmental effects and animal health had to work together.

"These will be the main topics we will be following here on the exhibition."

Finally, Mr Bartmer outlined some exciting statistics saying that this year over 50 percent of all exhibitors were from outside Germany and that EuroTeir remainded central to animal husbandry. He also said that some 270 registrations had been received from exhibitor on new and innovative products and that of these six were considered gold medal winners and some 50 others of silver medal status. Winners of gold and silver medals will be announced tomorrow night at the Exhibitors' Event.
