In addition to on-site courses held at the IGP Institute’s Conference Centre, distance education training is a valuable resource utilised by the IGP Institute to reach participants anywhere for 24/7 learning.

Kansas State University’s IGP Institute has teamed up with the American Feed Industry Association to offer AFIA 500: Fundamentals of feed manufacturing course August 15- September 16, 2016.

AFIA 500 is a structured, self-paced, five-week professional development course created by the feed technology group in KSU’s Department of Grain Science and Industry along with North Carolina State University’s Prestage Department of Poultry Science. The training will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of feed manufacturing.

Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of feed manufacturing including understanding how the US feed industry evolved and its current structure, as well as the different processing steps involved in manufacturing feed.

“We have been offering the course in partnership with AFIA for several years and continue to have success,” says Brandi Miller, interim associate director at the IGP Institute.

“We hope to eventually grow the program to include additional courses.”

The first week of the course will include the history of how the formula feed industry began in the US and the how introduction of new ingredients changed the formula feed manufacturing. Topics covered in the following four weeks include the process flow from particle size reduction to batching and mixing, to conditioning and pelleting, boilers, post-pellet systems, packaging and load out and maintenance.

This distance learning course is meant for anyone wanting to better understand how to improve feed quality and processing efficiency and an effective training tool to improve facility safety and maintenance. Even employees with years of experience in the feed industry will find this course valuable.

In addition to feed manufacturing and grain quality management course, the IGP Institute offers standard courses in flour milling and grain processing, and grain marketing and risk management.
