11/10/13: ICI acquires elevator from Cargill; The great global food gap; Calata corp's own brand animal feed

Agribusiness leader, Interstate Commodities, Inc.(ICI), has purchased Cargill’s grain elevator in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Cargill has operated the Lincoln facility since 1999, when it acquired Continental Grain Company's worldwide commodity marketing business
 
"ICI was founded in 1947, purchasing distillery grains and selling to the feed industry throughout the eastern United States,” said Greg Oberting, CEO. “In recent years we have been focused on expanding through value-added service in agricultural commodity transportation and logistics. Acquiring the Lincoln facility is part of that strategy.”

Although not strictly milling related, in light of global rising food prices, here’s a thought-provoking piece to kick start your Friday. 
 
According to an online survey by leading global information provider Nielsen, 85% of global consumers report that rising food prices will soon start to impact their choice of grocery products.
 
In the survey, 14% of global respondents indicated that they would soon buy more loose, unpackaged, unbranded cereal (such as rice, wheat and grains). 11% said they would stock up on fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, and 8 percent said they would buy more canned fruits and vegetables.
 
Back in May, British newspaper the Daily Mail published Snapshots of families' weekly groceries from around the world, highlighting the ever-increasing food gulf between nations.

Philippine-based Calata Corporation has announced plans to distribute its own brand of animal feed made by the Chinese agribusiness operator, New Hope Group.
 
New Hope is one of the largest feed producers in China with an annual production capacity of 26.6 million tons. It is also one of the largest suppliers of meat, egg and dairy product in China, providing more than 200 million poultry, and half a million tons of milk each year.
 
"We are creating our own brand that will be manufactured by New Hope,” Joseph Calata, company chairman noted in a text message to reporters. “We will distribute this to the whole Philippines," he added in a statement to the Philippine Stock Exchange.
