17/12/13: Feline grain protectors; Turkey celebrates exhibition anniversary; Russia's grain harvest

Chinese farmers may have domesticated cats more than 5,000 years ago in order to protect their grain stores from pests, a study suggests.
 
Scientists traced evidence of a close relationship between human and cat in the ancient village of Quanhucin, Shaanxi province, where millet cultivation was widespread.

 Remains of an ancient rodent burrow into a grain storage pit were also discovered, and indication that rats and mice posed a serious problem for Chinese farmers.

The Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TFIF) is marking the 10th anniversary of its Wheat, Flour and Bread: Past, Present and Future' - an International Congress and Exhibition due to take place next year.

Organisers have suggested that the congress will strengthen trade relationships and build new ties.

The Russian government has announced it is to purchase 5-6 million metric tons of grain from farmers in order to prevent excess supply from this year's harvest.

According to the country's agriculture ministry, this year's grain harvest is estimated to rise to 88-90 million tons, up from 71.7 million tons in 2012.
