Returning rains in the American Midwest have been linked to falling soybean commodity prices at the Chicago Board of Trade this week, reports Bloomberg. Increased moisture after a dry summer provides more favourable conditions for the crop, and with more rain expected in the northwest of the country speculators are expecting an increased supply.
This follows a World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate (WASDE) report last week revising down production estimates for the 2013/14 soy harvest by 106 million bushels, to a figure of 3.149 billion bushels. The global production estimate did not change, as South American forecasts offset the northern hemisphere’s projected shortfall.

With the American grain harvest already beginning, expert advice is flooding in about the best ways to minimize crop spoilage. Dupont Pioneer has offered tips on drying wetter, lower-quality grain, and Ohio State University warns about the safety precautions farmers need to take around grain bins when the wet grain stops flowing.
Convector Grain has been put up for sale by its new administrators Pitcher Partners. Creditors of the troubled Australian grain handler are estimated to be owed between AU$13-15 million, although it’s uncertain how much money they will actually receive.
