03/07/2014: Fiji rice producers get Chinese assistance

A Chinese delegation met rice farmers yesterday to identify areas of assistance, reports the Fiji Times.

Principal agricultural officer North John Cox told the Fiji Times the team's visit would boost farmers' commitment and dedication to farm work.

"We are blessed to have the team here from China because they bring with them a lot of knowledge and skills about rice farming. They have met rice farmers in the areas of Wainikoro and discussed rice farming issues with them. The team will see if there is a need to help farmers, then they will step in," Mr Cox said in a newspaper interview.

Members of the delegation visited potential areas for rice cultivation. Yesterday, the team also met Mohammed Khalid who is a newcomer to the field.

"We are working with the delegation to identify the areas we need assistance in. Their help is much needed and we look forward to working with them. They are also being advised by our team about issues surrounding rice farming.

"At this stage, it is only discussion and identifying areas of need and I am glad that at least our discussion has started," added Mr Cox.
