A grower in the Ord irrigation scheme of Western Australia has planted his biggest ever crop of sunflowers.
Peter Pegg is growing 40 hectares of the colourful crop this year and hopes the big sunflower planting will have long lasting benefits for his soil.
"I'm growing it mainly for the soil advantage," he said.
"Sunflowers are a hollowed-stem type crop, which aerates the soil in my view. So that's the main reason [for growing], but it should make me a fair bit of money I hope.
"It's a good looking crop, the best sunflower crop I've ever grown, but it's too early to tell how it will end up. I'm sure the birds will fly in and chew a bit, the grubs will take a bit, so we'll see what ends up in the bin," says Mr Pegg, adding that he's still six or eight weeks away from harvest.
With a wry smile, veteran grower Peter Pegg, says he's never had so many tourists pulling up on the side of the road to take photos of his farm.
