Ermias Kebreab, PhD, an expert in ruminant nutrition and Gerald Shurson, PhD, an expert in swine nutrition, were honored at an awards ceremony Monday evening for their professional achievements by the American Feed Industry Association and the American Society of Animal Science.
Dr Kebreab was presented with the Ruminant Animal Nutrition Award. He is a professor and DrSesnon Endowed Chair of the Animal Science Department at the University of California-Davis. He joined the faculty of UC-Davis in 2009 as a professor of animal science, establishing a nutrition modeling laboratory.
"During the last 10 years, Dr Kebreab has authored 111 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 34 book chapters, more than 150 abstracts and has been principal investigator for grants exceeding US$8 million" said Richard Sellers, AFIA's senior vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs.
"As one of his largest contributions to the industry, he's contributed to the research of the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from ruminants, which we know is an important step forward in the sustainability of the industry."
Dr Kebreab received his bachelor's degree from University of Asmara in 1987. He earned his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Reading, UK in 1989 and 1998, respectively. Dr Kebreab has worked as a post-doctoral fellow, adjunct and associate professor of nutrition modeling at universities in England and Canada.
Dr Kabreab also serves on national and international scientific committees, and has been an invited speaker for scientific and industry conferences in several countries on five continents.
Dr Shurson was awarded the Non-ruminant Animal Nutrition Award.
"Shurson is a professor at the University of Minnesota where he has responsibilities in research, on-campus teaching and Extension," said Richard Sellers, AFIA senior vice president of legislative and regulatory affairs. "His research program focuses on evaluating the nutritional value of distillers' dried grains with solubles in swine diets. It is really quite interesting."
Dr Shurson has authored more than 300 scientific publications and has generated more than US$10 million in research funding. His research has been presented to audiences in 15 countries. He provides educational programs for producers and feed industry professionals on nutrition and management related issues and serves as a consultant for ethanol and feed industries, and government agencies.
Dr Shurson grew up in southern Minnesota on a diversified dairy cattle and swine farm. He received his Bachelor of Science at the University of Minnesota and his master's and doctorate degrees in swine nutrition from Michigan State University.
The Ruminant Animal Nutrition Award was presented to Dr Kebreab by William Seymour of Southern States Cooperative and the Non-ruminant Animal Nutrition Award was presented to Dr Shurson by Craig Wyatt of AB Vista, both on behalf of AFIA during the ASAS annual meeting in Kansas City, Mo. The awards are sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association as part of its continuing awards program that dates back to 1948. The ruminant and non-ruminant awards were an addition to the overall awards program in 1998.
